I always heard these called a Sheep's Foot Packer; however, this style is not a true Sheep's Foot; if you ever saw a Sheep's Foot the difference is very evident; the "feet" or hooves if you will, of a Sheep's Foot are much like a real Sheep's Foot in that the "hooves" are on skinny six to ten-inch "legs".

This is a Tamping Roller.

It has been removed from an actual Rolling Machine, think "Steam Roller", and had a tongue hitch welded on so as to be pulled behind a big Pan Scraper or a huge Bulldozer.

I can see a million reasons why that wouldn't work out so well, the first one being it would be nigh impossible to back up; which is probably why it has been abandoned here since Davy Crocket was a little boy. 

This one was sitting here on Saturday, 26th April, 2014, and I don't think it has moved an inch; if it ever did, it would go plumb to the holler.

All compacting rollers are deemed Sheep Foot Rollers, as Sheeps feet Compact earth, not by appearance but size disproportionate to area for weigh distribution.

As Dave stated. Routinely called a "Sheep's Foot" roller. I have pulled both types and they're not that difficult to back up once one is used to working with them. Each have their distinct advantages with this type being great on flat ground such as roadbed prep. The "true" Sheep's Foot roller is better on hillsides as they push the spike deeper and don't usually slip. Personally I think the true Sheep's Foot roller is best for first layer compaction and the second type is best for finish, and buildup work as the cohesive bond is enhanced with both types utilized on a job.

what s the extra cover on the side ?  i didnt think a sheeps foot vibrated

Vibratory systems have been added to enhance compaction rates, time savings.  Similarly to Smooth rollers such as Asphaltic Concrete finishing rollers.

The pictured Packer had been sitting there for decades.

I photographed it again in June-2024.

We came through there 23-August-2025 and She's GONE.

There were deep Dozer tracks in the blacktop of the nearly straight-up-and-down hill where she was sitting; so, I figure the Dozer tracks had something to do with the disappearance of that old landmark.

Whoever left it there's grandkids are in the old folk's home now, so I doubt they came back to get it.
