Local trucking company must have gotten desperate, called me late one evening three weeks ago asked me to call back where I was to be in town next day so stopped by. Asked if I would be able to return to work, and as a dope I stated Yes. Been a full week back as of tonight, none less than 10 hour days, had my 40 in yesterday and likely another twelve today as a paving contractor needs materials in a BIIGG Way.
Wife, that has been arguing I NEEDED to go back to work as She HAS TO work(For Insurance purposes) is now turned the other cheek noting Lawn did need to be mowed so she did part of it, spent as much time for that as I spend on entire mow. Angry as I am not getting all the finite details done she expects, then noted she may have been wrong. Just a LITTLE too late for that as once obligated will stay until things slow back down. She now sees her work levels at home increasing drastically just to keep up.

A while back, I had a local guy ask if I was interested in driving "occasionally". It seems that there are plenty of people with CDL's, but a lot of them can't go to Canada (criminal, convictions).
I asked about "occasionally" and he said 2 or 3 days per week. I declined and said if it was 2 or 3 days per month, I might be interested, but I have kept a part time job that I had while I was working, which takes up more of my time than it should.

Company I retired from has asked for me to come back several times, both to work my old job and to also transport trucks up North and out West. Say they can’t find dependable help at any price. I told them when I went home 8 years ago that I was done, gave up my CDL at the last renewal, now at 63, I really have no desire to give up my present lifestyle to work again! The dog and I would sure miss out afternoon nap too.

Dave... getting close to summer.. Hire a local high school or college kid to work several hours a week cleaning up the farm and cutting the grass.. Everybody wins .

I will be 78 this month and gave up my CDL 3 years ago and have no desire to think about replacing them. As a old neighbor once told me I don't know how I got everything done will working because it's hard to keep up now.

I still don't mind a day or two of local dump truck driving , but after going from driving tankers with asphalt or sealants for roads that I don't miss .
Hauled snow this winter for a few days but night work and sure screwed up sleeping for days after . 79 Now and still have my CDL and passed the physical so guess will keep it a few more years . Did drop the Has Mat , that extra cost and fingerprinting hassle not needed to move dirt .

My own license comes due August, physical should be no issue with eyes fixed and losing weight now and trying to. Will drop Hazmat/Tank, Passenger Vehicles(Buses) but maintain the Class A and M Endorsement for the Bike. Still this morning, was REALLY tired last night as we pounded out a 12 hour sand haul to PACE Asphalt plant. The company has been hauling sand to them for weeks and is only around halfway in tonnage. We hauled with four Dump Trailers and two Dump trucks close to Six HUNDRED tons just yesterday.
Clay hauls to Cement plants has increased volume required but no extra trucks anywhere. Plants are likely to slow production runs where getting concrete for jobs could become a issue. Have mentioned in past, Millennials even some Gen Z truly believe there are Plenty that will work the nasty jobs so they will not have to. In ten to twelve years after the last of us stop working the crawling snail pace of materials moving will snarl what road or street or even housing production/repairs occur.

Concrete is already hard to get here. Preferred customers are covered first then the rest first come first served. It’s a 2 to 3 week wait to get concrete for a personal project these days. They can’t get material fast enough to keep up with demand. When we go to the lumber yard we have to find and load our own material because the yard guys either have court or a stomach ache and can’t work. Deliveries are a thing of the past at the local lumber yards. |

I have a theory. I certainly agree that the snow flakes are a BIG problem with employment. I also have to believe part of the reason for being short of help is the fact that the baby boomer generation is retired/retiring. When that many people leave the working world and people are promoted to take to their positions, it doesn't take long for entry level folks to get scarce.

It also doesn't help that you can live pretty good off the free cheese and NOT have to work.....

Still have my cdl but need to renew my physical. I dropped the hazmat also. About all I will do now is occasionally drive the church bus, I don't want/need a job, there is too much at the farm needs doing. Everyone around here is looking for drivers and other help also.

I've 2 friends that try to keep me as busy as when I was working.
They're 69 & 70 years old, I'm the kid at 68.
1 rents my farm and can't find young help that want to work his 12 - 14 hour 6 days a week schedule. He'd work 7's if his wife allowed it. We just finished planting corn, "in the rain" friday afternoon we'll start beans when it dries. He finally sold their cows, no more calving, haying, fencing or winter chores. 1 does welding/CNC piece work on contract, also does snow removal, dirt, trees & bldg demolition work, currently has between 6-8 employees. Does ALL repairs in house. I use his machine shop equip as needed, then repay him by working same number hours on his projects. |

Mostly what Jay said. Twenty years ago plenty of people looking for farm labor jobs here in California. You just did not want to look to close at the papers.

I work 1 hour a week and write my own schedule to keep my dental insurance. My manager and I have 20 plus years together and I go in to cover her lunch one day each week and then go home. Every now and then she will ask me to work a longer shift but maybe once in 6 months. I told her I would help her but no weekends, holidays or overnights. and the farm now comes first that I help on. Still have some vacation so if i don't want to work I can take one hour and pay my insurance.
