 Topic: Late WD or Early WD 45?

Hello, and I am new here. Just bought a Allis Chalmers tractor at auction this weekend and have an identity question about "Who it is?". The serial number on the rear drive has 155624. From what I have found on here is it can be a late model WD, or early model WD 45. It has WD45 stickers on the front, but has the engine plate like a WD on the right side. My question is, "Is there any other signs to tell it's identify"?

Serial number indicates an early model WD45. But without further investigation, there’s no way to tell whether the engine is a 201 (WD) engine or a WD block with WD45 internals, as the blocks are completely interchangeable.

S/n 146,607 was the first WD-45 tractor chassis, which would have been in mid-1953. S/n 160,386 was the first 1954 model WD-45. It's not a late model WD as per the serial number. If it has a WD engine or engine block, that was installed sometime in its past. The serial number for the engine is behind the carburetor air hose. The original engine would have said 45-XXXXXX-G. Your engine will say W-XXXXXX- G or K.

Early 45 replaced with a WD engine at some point in its 60+ years of existence.

Curved gearshift (helical gear/constant mesh transmission) occurred at approx s/n 127,000.

Had neighbor with a late model curved shifter WD. He bought it new & didn't keep stuff very long. Shifted only using the hand clutch, would not want to see the guts of that transmission. Could explain it if he was a Deere guy but he wasn't. (Ford)

Thanks for all of this information. It does have curved gear shifter. It also has a #'W111282K' underneath carb air hose. Looks like I got cheated a bit. Oh well, starts and runs. Did sputter a bit, but found first sparkplug wire broke and not running on all four cylinders. Is there a favorite site y'all frequent to purchase pieces and parts?
I figure a little tune-up, paint, and this wf WD/WD45 mix will work for my garden duties.

May not be as bad as you believe. My dad's original 49WD and my 56 WD45 have been shifted with hand clutch only after a little warm up. The WD since 49 and the 45 since 81. No teeth raking while doing so. Left leg is riding on the step late.

A clutch is a clutch. Doesn't matter how it is engaged. The hand clutch disengages the transmission. That's what the hand clutch was designed for.

I ask because at a junk sale I saw a wd 45 sell and there was a plate between the block and transmission. A know it all said it was a wd block and you needed an adapter plate but I didn't think that made sense.

WD-45 DIESELS had a 3/8" or 1/2" thick adapter plate, but not the gas engines.

The curved shifter question was based on whether it was a cobbled together WD/WD45.

My dad bought one of the last WD's, except for the engine it was just like the WD-45, even the curved shift lever.
