decided to get a few new windows for the house (we now own) they are the original ones when the house was built. can sit here and feel the cold air blowing thru the glass every winter. sooooooooo.....I calls a window company that was advertising great savings....good thing too, cuz without them great savings, i'd hafta sell most of my toys to buy 3 windows! whew! I've been in the wrong business all these years, they will replace my 3 windows for the great savings price of.....$16,000. sure glad i'm not replacing all the windows! i'll frame in the remaining ones before I pay that kinda green for more winndows! PfffffT!

Used to be $500 would get you a nice, double hung, thermopane style 3x4 foot window  and INSTALLED...now is 5K per ??!!
yikes... highway robbery for some 'modified' beach sand and recycled plastic....

possible option..use 'off the shelf..standard sized' windows ,fill in the gaps
windows here are 22 years old, leaky, use those  plastic film 'window in a box' kits. they work very well

also have blinds on all the windows, sun goes down..they go down.

When we remodeled we replaced all the windows.
We have one picture window Approximately 4’x5’
That leaked the gas out and got foggy inside. We’ve fought and fought to get it fixed. The warranty company just keeps giving us the run around.
I called the local glass company to just fix it. They wanted $500.00. I nearly passed out at that.
I can’t imagine $5000.00 per window.
Shameless, shop around and be patient. We wait 6months on average for windows these days.
I order long before we ever start a project when possible.
I’d also consider (as was already mentioned) off the shelf windows and frame to fit.

Ran this by local lumber yard supplier, they said everything is drastically high, cost of materials, cost of labor all thru the roof since Joey’s inflating efforts evolved. Not gonna get better any time soon
BTW a 2x6x12’ here is still over $18 each where three years ago were $8.

Just got a bid for replacing 9 double pane windows at $5,500 from a local contractor. And he can install in 4 months which is great as the other contractors I contacted either didn't call back or told me they had too much work. This guy said he is having trouble hiring new help. They show up smelling of Marijuana or he finds one that he feels would work and that one doesn't show up!

Don't those slimy window salesmen say that replacement windows will pay for themselves LOL

Had I known better 22 year ago, I'd have bought casement style NOT the se %&*(*$# double hungs. While the Dh are 'period' correct, casements(full pane ,opens like door..., SEAL a LOT better and seals last longer. Kinda what you WANT a window to do.....
Also, when buying new windows ,get 'them' to toss in a roll of 'fuzzy seal ' material that 'they' use. I can't find ,let alone buy the custom fuzzy sealer........
Also, if you've never opened a window, consider replacing with a 'fixed pane'. it'll be cheaper and a LOT better sealed...

Talk about puckerin'. We just had our roof done. That cost us 30K. Yeah, it's a 12/12 hip roof, but my ass still hurts from that one!  And that was the cheapest price. We had prices to $37,200!

Hey Shameless,,,,IN THE MEANTIME and before you dig up lots of them buried dollars,,, you can but some of those emergency kits that is clear plastic with the two sided tape and install them on inside of your windows for dang near stopping all the cold air blowing thru.  Some years back, I changed all the windows with the dual pane jobbies and they kept back the cold drafts pretty good but with thime that staarted to leak a little,,,so I use those plastic sheets and now got NO cold air drafts,,,,ClapClap m Give em a try
