Before anybody says "Zenith C6EV" for a carburetor
hear me out. I have a mid year 1930 25-40, serial # 24737. I have a parts manual that lists that it should have a Kingston L3 carburetor, same as my '29 20-35. I know that many of the early 25-40's had an air breather that mounted at the rear of the engine, vs. the front as per the usual. If this is the case, did the Kingston carb setup have to be the rearward mounted breather on the 25-40, then when the switch to the Zenith C6ev happened, they went to the forward mounted air breather? I have the embossment on the side of my block for a rear breather, and whichever setup is correct for my year/serial number is what will dictate how I proceed with what parts I need to find.

We have an engine out of an early 25-40 engine number 45333 that has that setup on it. It has the rear air cleaner and a rear inlet carbureter would go on it, It would have been the Kingston carbureter L3 The carb was run with an extra linkage on the intake manifold.

I have written down that I scrapped 25-40 # 24252 and 24439 so this engine may have come from one of them 2.

Thanks Gary, that's definitely some information that'll help! I wonder when they switched from the Kingston to the Zenith?

I found my engine number, and it's 45650. Not too far off of that number. Im suspecting it may have had this setup.

I have a 25-40 with Kingston carb and it has the front mounted air cleaner. It has mounting on the block for rear mount air cleaner and also has extra hole in the hood for rear mount. If I recall correctly it is a 1930 year model.

Interesting. I know that the 20-35 Kingston and the 25-40 Kingston were bolted differently, seeing as how the 20-35 would have been the forward version yours have. I wonder if somebody needed one and put it on and swapped breathers. No telling with these old dinosaurs!

The Kingston carb intake is facing rearward. The air intake tube is just like on an A. Possibly someone changed it out at some point, it doesn’t look like it to me.
