What would cause one of the dogs to break off of the impulse coupling on my Allis Chalmers b magneto?

'40 AC B - My Pappy always told me "Use your head for something other than a tack hammer!" I did. It makes a great 16 pound sledge hammer.

Could've been from the engine kicking back at one time or another. Best to replace the coupler outer shell. We have nice clean glass beaded one's in stock if interested. Wouldn't be a bad idea to inspect the cam pawls to make sure one of em' didn't get bent and launched a spring. HTH Steve@B&B
