Does any one know if 8guage cables are heavy enough on a 12 volt conversion.

NO... not for the starter... You need at least 4 gauge...2 would be advised.. smaller numbers are BETTER.

No at least 4 only if it's short.2 would be better O if it's a long run.i get mine made at the local JD they make to the exact length and hyd pressed ends.

I always go for thicker cables than what is called for. Might be overkill, but I know they shouldn't cause any problems for a long time. I just replaced the original 4 gauge cables with 0 gauge on my 1960 D14.

I make most of my replacement battery cables. NAPA has terminals which can be soldered. Welding cable works great. Remove only enough insulation to reach bottom of the conductor hole in the terminal. Tin the bare cable. Insert cable into the conductor hole in the terminal. Coat the bare wire with solder paste. Heat the cable with a HOT soldering copper and add melted rosin core solder . Allow to cool before moving the wire.

I like to put a piece of shrink tube over the end of the cable covering as much of the clamp as possible. Got some heavy shrink tube from NAPA some years ago that has some sort of sealer that melts and seals the ends really well. Amen about the heavy cable.

We have Battery cables in stock. I also make cables to the customer's C to C measurements. As the guys mentioned, 4 ga. is the norm for 12V systems. Using a 1 gauge cable (the norm for 6v) would be plenty heavy enough on a 12V system.... Steve@B&B
