   Hunt4Allis' last post in the Farm Equipment section mentioned square head bolts and got me to wondering when did manufacturers go from square head to majority hex head. I have a Servis brand back blade that has several square head bolts on it. Just curious. Thanks.

	Hex head bolts have been around ( a few) for 400 years.. Square head bolts and nuts have been around even longer. The nice thing about square headed bolts and nuts is you could use a beat up old wrench to hold or tighten the nut. A 5/8 inch wrench would tighten a 9/16, possibly even a 1/2 inch head.. Thats why the wide spread use for many years even into the 1960- 70s... normally not "high torque" applications.. just basic fasteners. HEX bolts needed special wrenches and sockets. hard to tighten a Hex head with an open end wrench.. When wrenches and sockets got better and more available, it was easy for the HEX to take over as the Majority.
	Like them all, but love the "B"s.

	When I re-do implements with square head bolts / nuts I like to replace them when needed with square stuff. I have found new in the past a couple of times on ebay and decent used in a big box of bolts Dad saved. Keeps the original look. Think I saw them at McMaster-Carr once too.
