Several years back, my Dad bought a WD45 in southern MN from a guy who had added an aux hydraulic pump (Cessna 24336RAB off of a combine I believe) to power a front end loader and power assist steering.  It was just what he was looking for - fresh paint and tires, new hydraulics, a loader - and "power" steering to boot!  Well it didn't take long to figure out why the guy who did all of that work had decided to dump it.  He mounted the aux pump up above the water pump and tried to run everything - fan/water pump, alternator, and this hydraulic pump off of one belt.  There was no good way to tension it, very little wrap on pulleys, and in the end you had to have that belt so tight that A - it chewed through belts, and B - the water pump bearing went out.  So ... we said we were going to give it one shot to find a new spot to mount that pump and a different way to drive it.  The tractor was virtually unusable as it was, so not a lot to lose.

We thought about buying the double crank pulley, but after looking all over online just couldn't figure out how or where to mount that pump so we could drive it with an added belt.  

As you'll see in the attached pics, I found a spot down low to mount the pump, then had a new crank pulley made with provisions to mount a sprocket to it.  Via a jackshaft, pillow block bearings, and a few more sprockets, we're driving the pump.  I was a little leery of running a chain that fast - and that may end up being a downfall of this experiment - but with about 20 hours of run time it's so far held up fine.

We ran a chain driven pump on a M IH way back in the 70s.  It is still in use today occasionally, just change the chain every so often, depending on how much use.

You've gone to a lot of work to get "live" hydraulics. A-C made a pump that sat under the radiator and was driven directly by the front of the crankshaft pulley. Thousands of them were made like that on the 400 series (445) hydraulic loader.

Better have some hi dollar chain or oil it every few hours . Mounted a pump for blade tilt on my dozer on drive line. Don't take long to eat a chain if not oiled ever few hours .       MACK

The factory pump for the steering mounted over the valve cover on the WD. The mounting bracket is shown in Agcopartsbooks.com page 276. 1200 psi relief.

Man I apprceiate the tons of work involved but to me it's too many chains and 'complicated'. I remember seeing here an easier setup,using a 'double roller chain' than coupled the crankshaft sprocket  to the hydraulic pump sprocket.The pump sat inline with the crankshaft. Someone here MUST have seen what I'm referring to , probably know the guy who posted it ,long,long time ago...(maybe on a 'B' ??).

My big concern is the damage when one of those chains whips off ! Also 'inline pump' is up high and protected....
For a 'double' pulley crankshaft setup, PrinceAuto up here have 'double sheave' units,that you insert an 'adapter' for the shaft you have..maybe TSC down there have them ? Might be another option ?

Right .... now you tell me! ;)

I think I looked at mounting my pump inline with the crankshaft pulley as you describe - with that roller chain coupler.  If I remember though my issue was that would've spun my pump backwards?  I was trying to avoid buying a different pump so ended up where I ended up after looking at other options to shoehorn things in elsewhere.

Anyway - I appreciate the feedback!

Yes, you would need  CCW rotation pump to direct drive.

Most , but not all pumps can be taken apart and reversed .                  MACK
