I stopped at a local gas station this evening because they were 30 cents cheaper than anyone in a 30 mile radius. I went in and paid cash for 45 bucks out of a 50 dollar bill. I happened to look at my side of the register display and it said "change due- $55". I told the woman I only gave her a 50, which she acknowledged but tried giving me 10 bucks of change Confused. Again ,I informed her of the mistake at which point she broke down crying (I hope from joy) as I gave back 5 dollars LOLLOL.
How many on here would have done the same as me * ??

I believe any true adult would do the same. I don't think I could lay down and sleep if I had taken the $10. The problem is true adults are becoming few and far between.

Your correct it is beyond sad. We stopped in Port Huron Michigan to eat,our bill was $17.76 I gave the young lady $20.01 not wanting pennies. She flipped right out,broke down started crying, called her manager over,SHE couldn't figure out what I was saying,it took 5 minutes to explain to them they owed me $2.25.. it is terribly sad,if the computer doesn't do it for them they are LOST.

Sometimes I wonder about honesty , vs , would someone else do in a situation .
I bought some things at a discount home store and after checking out took cart out to load car , notices another shopping cart setting near by with a box setting underneath basket - was a item I had looked at with a $50 price setting there .
 Wheeled it back into store and asked cashier if they knew who had bought the item as I just found it setting in the parking lot - wondered if someone bought it on a credit card so they could find the owner - kind of met with a indifferent attitude ( like you found it and are bringing it back in to find the owner  ??? )
  I know if it had been me who had left it behind I would expect someone to be honest but the thought also kind of lingered about would someone else do the same ?
 Seems I left a bag of things setting at Fleet Farm and realized it was missing when I got home and drove back and as soon as I walked into store - the cashier i had went through came up and handed me the bag - said you missed this one .
 Honesty is alive and well with many -

I always try to be honest about those kind of things...with one exception... the scrap yard. A few years ago I took in a load of several different types of junk. I cashed out and left. I stopped at a store a few miles down the road and grabbed the cash. I thought it sounded like more than I expected to get so I checked the slip. Sure enough I was paid for $70 of radiators is didn’t have. So I vent back and returned the money. They were not very appreciative and said “oh, ok, thanks”. I told them I didn’t want anyone to get in trouble for the missing money and they replied “ we never would have caught it”. I decided I wasn’t helping them out of their own mistakes any more... of course that was the last time they overpaid me!

i was at the local food store the other day, when i went out with my sacks of stuff, there was a box of day quil that was left in the cart that wasn't checked out, was in a blind spot of the electric cart i was driving and didn't see it when checking out, i went back in and paid for it. i'm sure the item left in the cart was on camera and i didn't want the checker to get in trouble for not checking the cart. kudos to ya'll that still have the honesty in yer bones!

One day Our local bank teller, at their drive up, mistakenly gave me an extra $100 cash in my envelope. There was a long line of cars behind me. So after I got my cash, I pulled forward into the bank parking lot & counted my cash - brand new hundred dollar bills. Two of them were stuck together. So I took the whole envelope back into the bank lobby where that same teller could count it again. She has never forgotten it. Thinking she told me that would have come out of her pay that day?

I use 2 banks. Wrote myself a check for $3000 from one bank to be deposited into the other.

I get the statement from the bank on which the check was written, only showed $300. Hmm...so I take my statement and the checkbook ( because it had the carbon showing how the check was written) put it in the drive through tube ( stupid COVID rules). She says, thank you for pointing that out, but we will have to deduct the $2700 from your balance. Well yes I’m well aware. Then she said, what did they credit you for?

Well crap, ....hadn’t got that statement yet. And this bank is way less than helpful, fees up the bungwa to do anything. So I quickly sign up for online banking, which I really didn’t want to do...I start looking, I find the deposit for $300, but attached to it is an image of the slip in their handwriting for $3000. This should be easy....

I call and explain. “Well, we will have to look into that. We’ll call you back.” Which they did, but then wanted to charge me for a phone transaction and for a research fee. SERIOUSLY??? This was YOUR mistake! Ok well we will dismiss that fee. (Yeah you will!).

Probably 99% of the months in my life a $2700 mistake of missing money would have caused bounced checks as I really don’t leave a lot of cushion in that checking account. Just the way things laid out last month I was ok. Boy that could have been a cluster!!!

Twice a week I spend $5 on Lotto America paying with a $5 bill. Every few plays I will match the "Star Ball" or some other combination of numbers and win $2. I then put my $2 winnings toward the next play and boy does that confuse the cashier! Sometimes I get $3 back in change, once in awhile they take the whole $5, then the one time they said I didn't owe anything. One of the cashiers will actually lay out dollar bills on the counter and add/subtract bills to get the correct change. When they try to give me $3 back I hand $1 back and say I had a $2 credit so that's what I should get back in change.

I suppose I could just have a bunch of $1 bills in my wallet to make it easy for them but then my wife might question why I have so many singles in my wallet.

Way back in my ill-spent youth, I was a pump jocky at the local service station. Was taught then and there how to make change. It was fool proof and no math involved, just counting. the bill was 17.76, so I take four pennies from the register, 17.80, take two dimes from register, 18.00, take 2 dollars out of the register, then count it out to customer same way, start at 1776 and count up. Now, in this case, you gave me an extra penny, which I return to you before placing the $20 in the drawer, and offer you a nickel for your five pennies. Seems like the round about way to get there, but it sure save a lot of mistakes
I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps 27

Jeff, you did great and the Lord will bless you for it. We never know what someone is going through in their life and this lady may have been having a really hard time and what you did meant the world to her. Honesty is the best policy. I try to be honest in my dealings because if I am not the Lord will hold me accountable.

As we devolve into a machine-guided society, Humanity becomes reliant on what it ASSUMES is an infalliable process and structure... hence, a long, gentle path downhill toward automated ignorance.

The teller's original error in Freed's circumstance, and many of the others cited later, was a simple keypunch error.

The difference between Humanity, and Automation, is that the former has soul and spirit, the latter has none.  The former sees the world as multidimensional, the latter, only flat numbers.

There's a place for automation in our world, as a tool to help... like a shovel, or a lever... but automation... machines, computers... they cannot recognize faults, they cannot apologize or forgive, and they cannot recognize and be thankful.

As society transitions into a gross automaton,  Organizations use machines as the primary tool to control behaviour... they use it to constantly pressure us to 'do' or 'not do', under the guise of 'improving' us, and those who submit to the control, give up their soul, and become part of 'the machine'.

The cashier cried because she made an error, that would have been brought directly back to her as punishment for a simple missed key, by the same machine to which she was surrendered to... and Freedguy (aptly named, by the way) rescued her from that plight.

The more we automate our world, the more we become the result of 'garbage in => garbage out'.

By the way...

Never allow ANYONE to convince you that Online ANYTHING... particularly BANKING... is 'secure'.

The bank will tell you all about the encryption and security THEY use...

...but it means nothing when the OTHER end has been compromised.

I do work for a small locally owned Grocery/meat market. The little old lady that is the patriarch of the family run business lives next door to the store. I had to break her floor up and repair some pipes. Bill came to 1,610.00$ . She says do you want cash . Yes I love cash . She catches up with me in the parking lot as I am loading up . She hands me a big roll of cash and there is a 10 dollar bill on the outside. I figure as large as the roll is she paid in 10's. Didn't want to count it in the parking lot with the whole world to see so I shoved it in my coat pocket. She says you aren't going to count it ? I told her if I couldn't trust her who could I trust. I get home and there's 1, 10 dollar bill and a bunch of 100 dollar bills . 16,110.00 is what she paid . Now the devil on one shoulder is thinking one thing and the angel on the other shoulder is thinking something else. Well the angel won . I took it back and she had a confused look on her face. She says she would not have even realized it . Now I am worried she pays someone 500 bucks to mow the lawn so I tell her I need to tell her daughter so someone doesn't take advantage of her. Oh please don't tell her she pleaded. . Well I told her and her daughter told me she had way more cash stacked away than you could imagine. Family got involved and took her cash . I hope I did the right thing by telling her family. Worry about the family taking from her but they seem like good people
