I recently acquired a 55 wd45. It was free including the 2 and a half gallons of water i drained from the engine sump. I am in the process of a complete overhaul and have converted to the d17 oil pump (internal regulator) with all the plumbing changes. I am not concerned with originality as it will be a working unit. 

My question is i have a generic oil filter mount that i would like to use for the oil filter. Can i simply "Tee" into the 3/8" oil supply line with a 3/16" line for the head and governor? 
Will there be too much flow to the head and governor or drop the pressure too much?
I don't have ( or seen) the correct D17 filter mount so i am not sure if it meters or restricts the flow.

Sorry for the newbie question.

Original 17 base doesn't meter the little line and your 17 pump will supply plenty of oil. Assuming you drilled the block and blocked the  "in" and "out " passages from each other and have the matching distributor gear,your home made filter idea should work. I'd get the base and lines for a full flow 17 from bone yard but that's me. (what I did). You will need to reshape a line to fit in a 45 and miss the steering.

I got to thinking...the fitting in the base for the little line may have a small orifice. I never paid much attention as it came from a 17 and knew that it would work. I'm not going to pull mine apart to see,sorry. A 1/16th in hole would be plenty I would think. I don't know if there is a problem flooding the head through the rocker shaft? Dr Allis would know about the fitting.

There is a whole thread on this in the knowledge section. Take a look at that - it seems to have everything covered. Have never done it myself so don't know for sure. I'm sure others that have can tell you if you need anything else.

I have studied the knowledge section pretty well but i have not seen that one detail. I guess it would be mute if I had the correct filter base. I just figured they must have designed in how much oil they wanted to go up top and the d17 pump is going to change that.

I don't think it matters much how much oil gets to the head, it just has to be a constant trickle as it gets distributed evenly to all the rockers. The fitting is the same size as the I.D. of the line itself which is 1/8 tubing, not sure on the wall thickness though. Get the correct filter base and lines if at all possible, it will just be that much less hassle.

I advise plugging drain back hole in block from bypass filter...more sure fire than counting on a gasket .

that has been done along with all the other block plumbing changes that were shown in the knowledge base. the only deviation that i have is the filter mount.
