CA air filter cleaning

Folks need some guidance. Took the oil cup off and the filter looks all gummed up. Took the whole filter housing off. Question now is what’s the proper procedure for cleaning the can and internal filter media?

I emptied the oil put thecapback on and set the whole assembly up in the parts washer stuck the hose in the top turned it on and let it run. It looked clean to me when I was done.

Not sure if you may be able to just soak and rinse but I did not have any luck with that method. The last time I cleaned one of these filters I took the bottom retainer off and pulled all the screens out. I think there was around 12 screens inside if memory serves me correctly. Soaked the screens in diesel fuel and scrubbed them with a tooth brush til they were clean.
The catch:
-the bottom retainer on the filters I cleaned were soldered on the filter body. Extreme caution and patience are needed or you will have a big fire.
-the filter screens are fairly malleable, you may have to bend them back in shape to get them back in the filter body. They may bend around a little when you are trying to pull them out of the filter and when your cleaning them.

Maybe there is an easier way but that was the most successful cleaning method I have found. It definitely takes patience and time but you will have a clean filter.

Welcome! Pictures of your CA would be great!
Have never been into a CA but if they are anything like the WD series. Then yes remove the screens from the bottom, soak and clean. Then reinstall. On one I unrolled the screen to make it easier to clean the gunk and debris out.

The CA shop manual doesn't call for removing the filter elements but does call for daily cleaning and daily replacing the oil on page CA-31 or total manual page 130.

I took the whole assembly off and let it sit in a bucket of kerosene for about a week.  The kerosene got darker, the filter media got cleaner.  Let it drip and air dry over night, back on the tractor with fresh oil in the cup.

Had some muddy oil water come out of it at first but she’s been in storage for about 5 years so no shock there. Still runs great though- just cleaning her up and getting it tuned up. Thanks again!

Had the air cleaner soaking a while, going to get it dried and painted.  Is there a method to refilling or conditioning the filter media and oil cup?  I'm unsure of how much and of what oil to use.

Manual says 1/2 pint motor oil in the lower removable cup. The air flow draws oil up into the filter media to collect the dirt and dust, self conditioning.

I don't imagine it matters much in the air filter as long as the oil is full.  I use the same thing as I use inthe tractor.  Rotella 15w40 conventional.

I went to a tractor show with a guy one time that pulled the oil cup off his WC I think and not only was there no oil in it, it didn't look like there had been any for a while.  He was just beside himself that he forgot to put oil in the cup and beat himself up for 2 days over it.  Couple days after the show he calls me and laughingly tells me that he forgot that he had replaced the metal mesh with a paper filter when he restored the tractor and thus didn't need any oil.  (Don't tell Maddux I told you this)
Maximum use of available resources!
