I have bought a few blacksmith hammer heads in the last couple years. I’ve had some hickory drying in my shop for about 3 years. I started splitting and cutting in to hammer handle blanks.
I shaped a couple and I staged them in two hand forged hammers I had. I have 6 blanks left and wood to make a bunch more. I shape them entirely with a large rasp and sand paper. I cut a few wedges while I was at it. I’m getting better at it and really enjoy it. |

Those handles will probably outlast you. Dad made most of his axe and hammer handles with a draw knife and a rasp.

I’m gonna make a draw knife when I get the forge going again. I had a really good one when we were building log homes. I have no idea where it went. |

Yes Joe I will gladly make you a hammer handle but I need the hammer head to fit it proper.👍

Interesting that you posted when you did... about a week ago, I gathered up two ball-peen hammers, one with a damaged handle, one with a lightly split one, and a third that'd come out of a debris pile where there was a small chunk of handle rotted off still wedged in. I bought some hickory handles and filed, sanded, and shaped them, and then set and wedged them in, filled the gaps with two-part epoxy... once that was set, I sanded the epoxy smooth, sanded the bottom for contour, then wrapped the top 2" of the handle with Hockey Tape (it's strong cloth), then applied varnish to the handle and tape. I've got three matching ball-peen hammers in three different sizes. I don't have any blacksmith hammers, nor do I have a power-hammer, or a forge... but one of these days, when I get the shop done, I will... ;-)

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Dave I use ball pine hammers all the time. Collecting hammers has became my new hoarder habit. I buy every one I think is cheap. I’ve reforged some in to straight peen or cross peen hammers and one I ground grooves in to make wood grain. I’m gathering parts and material to build a power hammer.👍 Edited by Thad in AR. - 13 May 2019 at 5:44am |

Thad,
Good hammers! Yes nice tools to have! I have a favorite medium handle ball peen that has just the right weight balance and patina. I have several others that always get picked up second if I cant find that one. Reminds me, I need to get out and work on the tractor brake project, and I am sure some hammering will be involved. I missed the pictures! Regards, Chris

I used to have a bucket full of hammer heads of all types and sizes, the old lady....oooops….I mean the loving wife would leave them and anything else out in the rain and weather laying where she last used it, either to be found a year or so later or never to be found again! of course the handles were shot when I did find them. i'm not sure what building I have them heads in anymore! guess I thought I'd always replace the handles some day. I will NOT let her use my old framing waffle hammer...it's hid and I know where it's at. do you make shovel and rake/hoe handles?

What he is hinting at, is that he needs a new/longer poking stick.

I have a pretty good collection that I hang on a eight foot section of the wall in the shop. They start with a 13oz. peen and end with a 20lb. rock hammer with most anything in between. You'd be surprised how often I use the 20.lber. One neat one I have is one they used to make round rods with. Never saw one before. Fun hobby.

I think he's handled the pokes just fine. It's when he drinks to much and gets hammered that he feels like he has nails in his head. you've gotta claw at em to pull em out.
I've made quite a few gun handles with walnut and done them with nothing but a draw knife and sand paper a pencil and been real happy with the results. Next I'm going to try and make some inserts out of red cedar. It's such pretty wood but I don't know if it's hard enough. |
