I have a 1948 WD with 3 bolt wide front end, can it be adjusted wider than it is currently or was that only an option on newer models? And if if can be adjusted, how is it done?

If you look closely at the axle, it will be quite obvious that the width can be adjusted
by using the available holes in the axle tube and movable sleeves on the tie rods. ![]() Having said that.....you may have a big task ahead of you if you choose to do it. Years of rust on the axle stubs and tube as well as the tie rods and sleeves may require the use of some serious heat and hammering to free them.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll give it a try, but I’m sure you’re right in that it will be stuck. The tractor has been in the family since new, and I don’t ever remember the front being widened, so I bet it’s rusted up tight.

A 50/50 mix of Acetone and ATF is a strong rust remover.

I think I took my WD wide front apart to allow it to be able to move someday.
I can tell you what not to do! Don't beat on the vertical spindle, they seem pretty rugged but can be caved in with a sledge and it can cause steering issues. crawl under the front end and look at the outer square tube that the inside rides in. I believe it is open all across the bottom. That is the key to getting this system loosened up if you can spread the joint it will break the rust and start the process. It may not be a easy task. But once freed up and some lube you should be good. Post some pictures. Regards, Chris |

Thanks Sugarmaker, that’s a good tip , I wasn’t aware of the opening on the bottom tube. I’ll start there with the mix the other member mentioned and see what I can get done. May take me awhile, but I’ll try to post some pictures

Something stationary on both sides and a com-a-long or winch to maintain constant pressure.Then add some heat.
