the hand clutch on my 45 doesn't have any "resistance" when pushed or pulled. When engaged and driving, if i stop abruptly the hand clutch moves forward and disengages the drive. it used to stay back and took some effort to move forward to disengage. any advice would be appreciated.

Need to remove cover and remove some shims from all three places. Could also rotate over center plate to a different place. While in there, check for pins that may have fallen out. MACK

If the big snap ring comes off, it is always engaged. Does the tractor still stop (or slow to a creep) if you push the clutch lever forward? AaronSEIA

yes, the clutch functions, just has no tension. you can move it forward and backwards with virtually no resistance. |

I'm with Mack. Almost has to be shims. Does it hold good when engaged? I'd take the battery box and cover off and give it a look. Service manual says how to adjust the shims. AaronSEIA

If you remove shims be sure and save them.

Yes definetly shims need to be removed. I bet if you put it in 2nd and stomp on both brakes when moving, you will come to a complete stop because the hand clutch is slipping. I would reccomend moving the over-center plate also. A properly adjusted hand clutch should take more than 40lbs of pull on the handle to engage it over center. Also the snap ring has no effect on if the clutch disengages or engages. My wd45 had no snap ring when I got it and still doesn't and the hand clutch has been working fine since then (4 years)
