Looking thru Dad's farm records from 1948. New equip purchases. Roto baler June 12-$1043. AC side delivery PTO rake July 1- $375.98.
WD tractor and cult July8- $1650. Round bale loader new (not AC. Short line) June7-$276.45 Hammermill from the Co-op $347.50. New barge wagon&hoist AC Aug 26 1948- $299. |

Every $100 in 1948 is $1,041 today.just over $171,000 for the WC and cultivator.

Not sure what inflation calculator you are using, but the one I used said that $1650 in 1948 would be $17,233.39 in 2019. http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

Didn't matter much. All of that was run thru cattle. Sold a lot of cattle and hogs. He used to call it "Vertical Integration". Good question,tho.

Looked it up out of curiosity- Corn prices January 1948 $2.46; January 1949 $1.25. Looking at the surrounding years, it looks like the 1948 price was a huge spike.

So if I used this inflation calculator right and corn was $1.25 in 1949 so today corn is $13.22 that's higher than I have ever gotten for corn, at that price we can all to pay for a new tractor in a year or two! lol

I remember dad paying $1.00 a bushel for ear corn in the 1950's. There was a whole lot of discussion between mom and dad about it. They had 5 of us kids to feed. he had started to feed out his calves.

Always great to read these stories, Kuddos to your dad for digging in when he got out of the service. My FIL had similar story but bought Massey Harris. My dad bought a new Roto Baler in 48 and a new WD in 'That generation knew what work was for sure.
