I am looking at starting back on an old tractor that has been sitting at my shop several years. It is a 185 that needs an engine rebuild. Back several years ago I thought it would be about a cheap to buy an already built short block as to rebuild the engine myself. Well not exactly but worth the difference in cost for the ease of the project.
It looks like that is not true anymore unless someone can give me a good engine resource. Any comments would be appreciated. I may just build it myself. I've build several smaller engines for lower horsepower D-series tractors , but they were all gas burners.

Make sure you have an Allis service manual for the 185, not I&T. They are quite a bit different than the gassers. See if there any retired mechanics in your area that want a project to work on. The guy I get to rebuild my engines is more than reasonable, he likes having things to work on.

Proper valve and seat grinding is very important in a diesel. The valves have to standout the same height across the head and to a certain spec. Sleeve standout is important too so you won't blow a head gasket.

My dad and uncle ran an AC dealership in the 60's, so I have real AC shop manuals.
My dad use to say a diesel was a harder build. I bought the 185 before he passed. We were going to rebuild it together. Now he'll just be smiling down. |

My grandpa overhauled a diesel once, and it was the only one he ever did. He rebuilt countless gasoline engines, but he did say the diesel was challenging. Ran good when he finally finished, though.

Liner protrusion HAS to be equal across the deck on these with a single head, There are nuances to any engine where these are pretty sensitive.
