I have a M crawler and when I pull back on either steering lever, nothing happens, the crawler keeps going straight. When I pull back on the steering lever and touch the brake, it turns on a dime.
I adjusted the steering clutches per the operators manual but it didn't seem to change anything. The left side got slightly better but not where it should be.
I haven't messed with steering clutches before so does this sound like the clutches are worn out or would cleaning them help? Any guidance from someone who has experience with this would be much appreciated. I don't want to take the final drives off if I don't have to.

Mine works the same way. With a load on the machine, pushing or pulling, when you pull back on the steering lever it will turn. With no load, needs the brake to turn.

I wondered the same thing on my HD16. However the group is right, going up hill, pushing any load and or backblading it turns fine. I was used to a smaller dozer from my past, and it turned on a dime without foot brake application. It was a John Deere 450C.
I did as you did, adjusted linkages to speck and it helped a little but touch a food brake and she turns fine.

Jerbob,
Now I understand your concern with how your was HD16 turning. The Hd16 and 450C steering controls are two different animals. On the HD16, and others with separate steering levers and brake pedals, the steering clutch lever releases the steering clutch and brake pedal applies the steering brake, two separate functions. The 450C, and others with combined function controls, the lever or pedal operates both the steering clutch and the brake. The steering clutch releases as the lever is first pulled. As the lever is pulled further back the brake applies. The further you pull, the harder the brake applies. Pedal steer similarly releases the clutch then the brake for steering. The 450C and others, generally have one separate brake pedal that applies both brakes together to stop/park the machine.

Good info guys. I didn't realize the brakes were needed to steer with no load. I always assumed the steering lever was a single function (i.e. pull the lever back and it turned).
