Can someone help me with the identification of the twin wheel sickle bar mowers.
First ,,, what is the difference between 80 and 82 mowers ? Then there are variations of each ? Side mount ? S and SI Three Point with a tail wheel.... and without a tail wheel ? Snap coupler versions ? Trail versions that just hook to the draw bar. What are the 80/82 _ _ _ designations for each of them ? Thanks in advance. |

80 was the earlier model, there was a 80S side mower with a frame that mounted under the tractor,80R rear mounted on a bracket that went into the drawbar brackets,80R3 was a 3pt mower.82S side mower hung off the right side of the tractor,82 R3 was a semi mount rear mower with a tail wheel and remote cylinder to raise and lower the blade.80T trailer mower had a straight axle across the mower,82T trailer mower had the angled axle cornered real well.Think I have examples of all of them.

Another difference I remember is that the 82 has the drive bushing with slots, while the 80 had a bushing that has a round cavity or protrusion, can't remember which, for sure

The "Twin-Wheel" A-C mowers began with the #7.
All the other mowers you mention evolved from it. In addition to differences already mentioned: Later 80 models and all 82 models used a much heavier cage around the gear box along with a 3/4" thick instead of 5/8" thick cut bar. (Big improvement) Early 80 models had open bearings at the ends of the connecting rods. On later models, the bearings were enclosed with a cap. Later 80R, 80T and all 80S and 82S mowers used ball bearings at the pivot point for the raising and lowering of the cut bar. (Another Big improvement) The 82SI (industrial) had 2 lift cylinders; one for the mower frame and one for the cut bar. BTW: There was also a model 82SH, another Industrial model built specifically for the Model I-40 tractor with the Industrial loader attachment. It had all the features of the 82SI PLUS it was powered by a hydraulic motor rather than a belt. There are probably other differences but I think I hit on the most significant ones that weren't already mentioned.

Bringing this back up. These mowers interest me. They seem very similar to the IH balanced head mower. I have an IH and I love it. Use it alot. They are not and never have been cheap to own or fix. So a back up would be nice.

Can we get this thread added to the "knowledge base" section ?
I believe it is worthy of it... |

Model 82-T (pull type) had staggered wheels with the left tire being in-line with the sickle. All model 82 series had a giant jaw type breakaway device that looked like a giant clothes pin.
