AC wheels on a JD 435

The local paper did an article on how one of the high school's has a program to restore old tractors.  The picture below was the main picture for the article.  I thought that the wheels looked oddly familiar:



Was this original equipment or did someone in the past do an AC upgrade on this tractor?  If any of you guys know the backstory, I would like to read about it.

Deere offered power adjust wheels for that tractor. Either after the patent ran out or they paid Allis a royalty as some other companies did back then.

That wheel center is not like AC's. Also looks to have the screw on the slide bracket to tighten .

I have seen a setup like this on a Farmall but don't remember the size.

years back, my mechanic was working on an old john deere backhoe about the size of that tractor and it had 24 inch wheels on it, it set to low to the ground and would drag and get high centered, I had a tractor in the shop at same time, he got to studying on the bolt pattern and figured they would fit. I found him  a set of tires and wheels off another allis tractor and we put them on it for clearance.

The JD wheels have a different clamp. Those power adjust wheels were not an Allis-made item they were an outside supplier contract, similar to the F&H wheels. Look in the current Unverferth catalog, they list all the rim clamp parts for their power adjust wheels and they look exactly like Allis.

Allis invented and patented the power adjust wheels and anyone building and selling anything like it before the patent ran out paid Allis Chalmers a royalty. That's the way I understand it.

They were invented and designed by Allis but the ones on the John Deere would have been an outside company by that time. All power shift wheels have been made by other companies for some time.

Of course. How long do the patents last with something like that? Also I think the 420/520/620/720 were available with power adjusted wheels in 1956.

I have a WD that has a Ford rim on it. Its been too many years ago but I think the holes in the rail for wheel settings was different.

I believe those patents were good for 7 years and renewable for another 7 years. I would assume the first patent was issued in 1948 unless it was issued a few years before the WD came out.

By that time, the patent prolly expired.  The vid I showed was the system ford had, on the hundred series tractors. 3000's didn't come out, or more accurately in, as they were brit imports, till 1965...Wink

Patents last for 17 years and can be renewed with slight tweaking to the design.

I was told once that Allis did not own the patent on that wheel design but it was a wheel company or tire company, I forget which, but Allis had exclusive rights to it.
