    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 at 3:05pm
Someone brought me a holley from a 190. I've never been into one before. I want to soak it in cleaner over night but it has internals like I haven't been around. There looks like a diaphragm under a plate that's held on with three screws. This diaphragm has a tear in it. Also how do you get the spring out from under that plate. The spring sits in the upper housing with some kind of small round brass plate or plug holding it in but I don't want to wreck anything by just prying on parts. Also this carb is so full of gunk I had to use a needle nose pliers to pull the float needle out of the seat, a first for me! Any advise as to taking it apart? It looks like I may need a kit. Are there any good quality non foreign kits available for this?

The owner doesn't want to change it over to the Bendix or Zeinith or what ever the other carbs were.

PS I looked at a parts breakdown and the brass plate or plug I mentioned looks like it is called a "pump piston". The way that float needle came out I doubt it will be easy to remove that piston.

Thank you for any help,
Lonn

Those carburetors are designed much like an automotive carburetor. That is what makes tractor mechanics hate them. The diaphragm is a power valve. The piston is an accelerator pump. Everything in them MUST work properly or the tractor will be a be-atch to drive, althoug a sweet machine when right. I like them for my pulling engines. Research then read and understand everything you can find out about them. The adjustability of them makes them far superior to normal tractor carburetors.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

OK, so looking at kits available on line, I can't find one that shows a diaphragm. Just a gasket. One site mentioned that it's rare to have a carb requiring a diaphragm. What I have sitting here is a gasket and diaphragm in one piece. Orange rubber in fact. Where would I get the diaphragm? The AGCO parts catalog gives no part number for that diaphragm. It is item #43 on the AGCO parts page.

I think I found his website and the kit listed does not include a diaphragm. I may give a call though.

Have had very good luck with Treadwell CarbCo.
Works on automotive stuff going back to the 1920's, tractors of any era also and runs rebuilds on test engines, knows his stuff. Tel: 607-829-8321
Quick turnaround and rebuilds are reasonably priced.

So I called and the person at Mike's Carb gave me a kit number K5012 and she said it had the diaphragm but the video they put up showing the kit shows no diaphragm. Does anyone know if I really need this diaphragm? I think I do but I don't know much about these carburetors.

OK I can't see how I could get by without the diaphragm. It's there for a reason though it ran with this bad one. Now the owner wants a rebuilt carburetor to replace his Holley. He found one online through Allstates Ag Parts. Are these worth putting on? He's pretty insistent that this is what he wants but I'd like to know if anyone here has any experience with these rebuilt carbs from Allstates Ag. Also, if they can rebuild them then why can't I?

Never mind, Allstates is out of stock. Convinced owner to replace with a Zenith out of convenience.

The Holley web parts page shows ONE diaphragm. It says 30mm and that's all. It doesn't say which carbs it is made for. Is it one size fits all? I dunno.

Looks totally different but I found several different diaphragms on their website and none look anything like what I have. Their site doesn't even recognize the Holley part number, which is LIST 2871. Allis number is 4020418.

If you can't understand the Holley tractor carburetor, it is best to leave it to someone that does. In that scenario it is just best to replace it with something simple that you can understand. These are obsolete only because they were not accepted by tractor mechanics. Parts are for the most part NLA. there are some places that still have parts if you know how to find them.

What most are unaware of is should the engine backfire AT ALL that power valve will be junk, the auto carbs are noted for that where they self destruct and No guts after a backfire. Used to Vaseline the bowl/block gaskets so could pull and reuse just to be able to swap power valves. Kept a load of them for a long time and now just buy a repair kit when need.
