Anybody ever rebuilt a track tensioner on a 653? Need advice on where to find parts and the easiest way to accomplish the task. Is it expensive?
Thanks in advance, |

Hello Andy. Welcome on the forum.
I have not done anything with s AC653 but have rebuilt the track tensioned on my HD16. On my tractor, it is s hydraulic unit that you use a grease gun on s zero fitting to expand a ram to put tension on the idler arm and put pressure on the units. Everything from the grease zeros to the rams themselves were shot. It can be done and not expensive in many cases just labor intensive. I suggest posting lots of pics of the adjusters and let the group know the problems you are trying to fix. This is s great group and you will get great advise. And let me say again,,,we love pics. |

Thanks for the feedback jerbob. I will get some pics up as soon as I get it cleaned up. Left track tightens up just fine, right side takes grease but doesn’t move. I’m assuming a busted seal is the culprit.

I will send you where I got my seals from. I was able to use a porta power and push the idler arm forward allowing me to be able to remove the idler are and then when off tractor, was able to pull piston, home cylinder walls, and replace inner seal. Once together worked perfectly. Will send pics. |

Most decent hydraulics shops will have a seal that can work, these were not made specific for AC.

Some pics of my rebuild on my track tensioner. I got my seals from an old Agco dealer that took over an Allis Chalmers distributor. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One pic shows seal not holding and grease just pumping everywhere. One pic shows idler arm off unit. I had to re weld the rod as it was cracked. One pic shows wha the piston looks like out of unit and the new seal vs the old one. The old seal looked like it was an old plumbing gasket they put on. |

So, you used the ports power in lieu of separating the tracks? Thanks for the info above.

Yes Andy.
I lucked out and was able to NOT have to split my tracks. I put the Porta Power again to the idler arm and housing for the recoil housing and was able to not only free up the stuck and rusted idler arm, but move it forward enough to allow me to remove the idler arm assembly intact. I then, with much effort, was able to pull the piston out of the housing (as it was full of dried out old grease and held in my suction) and polish the piston, repair the push rod and replace seal. Works great. |
