 Topic: 172 Mower Chain Guards

I will be looking into having the front and rear chain guards made for the A-C mfd. 172 mower. I'd like them to duplicate the original as much as possible. I have the Parts Illustrations and photos in the Op Manual. Would anyone with either guard Get me some measurements? These would include; length, thickness, angle lengths at ends, angle length at center and size of chain. Any help appreciated. Tired of getting pelted in the back.

My pull type172 doesn’t have them, so I’m not of much help but I’m interested in how this project turns out as I’m also tired of getting pelted in the back. My 3pt mounted 160 does have the chains,but it’s newer and different than my 172.

I have some pictures. PM with your e-mail and I will send them. Don't have time right now to resize for the forum. They are around 74" long and about 6.5" wide in the center. I will try to get some other measurements soon for you.

My 172 mower did not have the front chains on it, what I did was to bolt
a 6 inch wide baler belt on, that keeps objects from coming out the front the same as the chains did.

My 160 does not have chain guards. The 172 has a front chain guard. I could maybe take a picture and post. The measurements I wouldn't be able to do until sometime in the new year. I always wanted to make a drawing of the guard so it could be reproduced like the oem guard AC used.

From the Parts book, both the 5' and 6' mower use the same rear shield, front shields are different though. I stopped by the metal fab shop today to see if they could make the support only with holes for the chains. They can make them no problem. Gave me a rough estimate of $350 for a pair. If I buy more than one price would drop around $75 per pair since set-up fee is covered in the first unit. I want these to be as near identical to the original as possible, so I really need the information requested in my first post in order to proceed. Don't need any photos, but thanks for the offer. I'm going to have a set made for my mower. If anyone else wants a set or just one please let me know. I'm not looking to make a profit from these, so depending on final tally, price would be adjusted. You would have shipping and cost of support from me. Once you get it you would drill mounting holes, buy your chain, rod, mounting bolts and pins local. I NEED A COUNT of which shield you would buy so I have some idea as whether to make any extras. This would be a beneficial safety addition to your mower. As a side note, in 1968 the complete front shield cost $51 and a complete rear shield cost $25 from your A-C Dealer.

Those chain guards are basicly just slots for the links with a rod shoved through...assume you have a picture..If not send me a cell number...You can probably make them with a metal punch or refit some from another make...Mark

I bought a whole pallet fulla stuff, had several guards offa D-80 woods mowers, Think I paid like $25 fer it...
