I have a really big Black Gum (Tupelo) Tree I could cut for firewood. Question is Will it Split? Sweet Gum don't split worth a hoot. Piss Elm? Forget it. Not Splitable at all.
Right now I'm splittin Post Oak. Really any Oak or Hickory splits good. Never had any Black Gum to play with. If it can't be split I will not cut it down and buck it up

With my wood splitter there are some types of wood that do not split, but with a sharp wedge it will cut thru most any thing including knots. So yes with a sharp wedge it will cut or split any type of wood

like acd says...have a sharp wedge and let it cut on thru. I have a 3 pt splitter, has a Cat hyd cylinder on it and hooked into the hyd's of my 180D. I've never found anything it won't split or cut thru yet.

I need to pull my splitter out of the barn, neighbor 'Borrowed' it and bent the crap out of it so I found as he was trying to over weld the screw up. I had him stop, he will not ever 'borrow' from my equipment again. I need to repair it and set it up for going back to my Brother In Laws place as that is where I built it for. We do not have wood heat here at all.

We've split piss elm. Most will split but there are the spiral pieces that just go in the camp fire or on the burn pile. I don't think we have any gum trees up here so I can't help you on that.

I googled Splitting Black Gum . Answer I got was, Don't even try. It don't split. Stick to straight grain woods if you want to burn split wood in your wood stove or fireplace insert.

I cut piss elm and stack it off the ground for 2 years, it doesn't burn too bad then. This reminds me to fill the darn woodrack tomorrow. Ol Shameless is supposed to dump on us Sunday. That's not all bad maybe some of my freeloading in laws won't be able to get here for dinner on Sunday, but don't take any bets on that.

OK, I had some 'narly' tree here and it split ok. MY 'trick' is to cut into 10-12" long logs, then the electric splitter will do it's thing. The shorter log allows the cutting wedge to follow the grain. I cut to 12" cause I only burn in my outdoor firepit.Smaller logs fit the truck rim real nice ! Electric splitter, a friend dropped off, works great..once you bypass one of the safety interlocks. It's fast enough for me, clean, quiet,no mess either !

I had a splitter with a 8 hp Briggs and a two stage pump. Lots of times piss elm and sweet gum made it drop down a stage, but that sharp wedge just kept moving. i spose you already have a splitter, hope it is not a puny one.
