 Topic: D17D, 90 series combine and clover

Folks, I had been watching this field of clover ripen for the last several weeks. Two days ago I went buy it and there was a pull type orange combine harvesting the seed. Noticed a D'series Allis tractor pulling it too! Thought that's odd? Who is still combining the way my dad did it 40 years ago? Went by yesterday and saw the red and white Bronco setting there and knew it had to be my friend of 60 years, Ted! I went home changed and headed back up to see him. When I got there he was hot and dusty. Here are some pictures as he was working. The D17 diesel and the 90 series Allis combine were getting all the seed that was there. It wasn't as heavy as expected, but the 16 acres was almost done when I got there. Hope you enjoy! BTW Ted has orange blood running through his veins too! Good friend since the first day we went to school!

Wow, that's a nice looking setup! Really good looking combine and tractor. I'm glad you caught him for a chat! Maybe in a couple years he'll need some help plowing it up.

Dad seldom straight cut clover with r 90.Mowed and windrowed. I was young and uninterested when that was going on.The thing I remember is the seed was collected in the bag from the Scour Clean and the junk went in the bin. There were gunnie sacks standing all over the field to be picked up.

Gary, Not positive of the brand But I think Ted said it was red clover. He thought maybe the lack of bees kept the crop down?? Yes there was something in the scour clean. Its been so long since I was around these combines I am not sure about the seed? I think it was in the bin. Not sure what was in the bag on the scour clean then??? Where is Creston when you need him? Yes we do need to go see old friends more often! They are too soon gone!

Awesome pictures and thanks for posting them!! I am not as familiar with the 90s as the others so I must ask is that hydraulic cylinder on the tongue to put it in transport position? If so, I never knew that was available back then. Thanks again for the post. Ryan

A neighbor farmer that I worked for when I was a teenager was strictly a JD man BUT he had a all crop 66 that he combined his clover seed with.

The cylinder on the tongue raises the head. The forward lever sticking down on the post behind driver releases the lock for swinging tongue. The other two levers engage seperator and bin unloader. There is a pull rod back at the bin you can also use to engage bin unloader.

Great to see these photos. I have excellent memories of working with my dad combining clover with an All Crop 90. Nice to see this machine still in action.

Combine has the clover seed in the tank, and the weed seed and fines go in the sack. Don't want the weed seed back on the ground.
Don, Allis claimed to that they could combine any seed... and had multiple screens for them, and for the ScourKlean too... It was fun combining oats, barely, rye, wheat, flax, soybeans, clover, alfalfa, and timothy... been years since the old 66 been out in the field, but the price of seed these days, need to find some seed to combine.

Thank you for posting. Dad paid for an 80 acres custom combining with a 1955 WD 45, a 60 combine and a roto baler. Memory's of combining clover seed 1 year, about 1964, combine had a small hole rusted out. It seems all the seed was running out that hole. We went to the house, pulled out the tar bucket and filled in the hole with old black tar. We had seed from that clover for years afterward. I still have the WD45. Again thank you for bringing back a good memory.

Thats cool! So if a guy wanted to grow 20 acres of a small seed crop, what is bringing top dollar? What are people paying good money for these days?

 Did the same . About a month ago went to a friends to borrow a pto shaft I broke and he was in wheat,17 acres with a 72.

Allisrutledge, Great picture of the Allis tractors and machinery working to bring in a seed crop! Thanks for posting it! Folks, Glad you enjoyed the pictures of Ted and his Allis' harvesting clover! He is a collector and uses them for farming work. I remember riding on the tool box of the WD45 while Dad harvested grains. He said those old 66's were just the best!

Have 66 big bin and a 90 stored upstairs in the barn with a roto baler. These are the best clover machines going. Back in the 60's we combined red clover seed with an Allcrop 90.
