I recently bought a 6070 and it smokes something terrible
drips oil from the breather tube!! I know nothing about the 6000 series
tractors other than I wanted one to help my son-in-law with haying. Hour meter shows
about 5000 hours. I am not sure where to start, looks to me like a complete
overhaul. Could it be something simple like oil from the turbo? I have rebuilt
two 426s but I knew they needed overhauled. It is a late model with improved
thrust bearing, it starts hard but doesn’t knock, oil looks good no water in
it. Injection pump is not black so I guess it has been rebuilt and the starter
looks to have been replaced. Engine does not appear to have been worked on,
bolts and nuts do not looked to have been disturbed. Any thoughts are welcome
and appreciated. Thanks |

Dripping oil from the breather ?? They all can do that to some degree. Hang a jug under it and see how much it is per hr or day of run time. Smoke?? WHAT COLOR of smoke?? A bad turbo or turbo intake side leak would give black smoke. White/blue smoke could be a bad injector. Does it hit on all FOUR cylinders?? Injectors installed backwards will do weird things. Does it have any POWER ?? or is it a total dud ???

American Bosch injectors can be installed 180 degrees off. Drip/return line has to go towards the valve cover, not away from the valve cover.

Thanks guys I haven't really run it other than to load and unload then put it in the barn. We have been busy with hay. The smoke is blue and I haven't had time to crack the lines to see if it is hitting on all four. I did notice that when I shut it down I could here the turbo spooling down always a good thing to here. I am reluctant to run it much with the way it is blowing blue smoke and not knowing anything about it's history I bought it at an estate sale the owner had passed and apparently he was a loaner that know one ever talked with, not even his family. I don't like that it starts hard it should fire right up at these temps.

I have one with 7300 hours. Still runs great but does have some blow by and drips oil out the breather. They do smoke quite a bit when cold and at low rpm. I would give it a good workout and see it the smoke clears up.

You might try giving er a stiff drink of some Stanedyne or Howes fuel conditioner in the diesel fuel, then give er a workout. Darrel

Blue smoke and hard starting can be indications of low compression. Might need a ring job.

Don't all the 6000 series start hard because of the low compression? Don't they all have a ether button? If the temp is under 65 I plug our 6060 in for 30 minutes. But a great tractor, try some fuel treatment and some fresh fuel. Ours doesn't "slobber" but it does smoke at idle.

Dads starts just fine down to about 45 degrees. It had become harder to start and then began missing one day while baling. The pump needed to be overhauled. It starts much easier and smokes less. The 6000 series do smoke when at idle. And it has a blue haze to it, above 1,000 rpm it clears right up. Like the DR said, throw her open and take it for a spin. .

My F2 combine has the ether injection and a "not hooked up" glow plug. It's wired so the ether wont spray until the starter is running. Works pretty good that way. Need a new can for it.

Steve DITTO The factory ether button on ours gives a premeasured shot and only if the engineis is being turned over. I never press the button unless I got lots of white smoke. I have never heard it "rattle" like they do when you spray ether in the air cleaner. How about it Dr. Allis, is the "factory" ether injector still a no-no?

Had a 6080 on the auger one fall and it started running rough. Thought it might be something major wrong but had a mechanic say it probably just needs a workout. That fall we hooked up a 4-16 plow and turned a few acres and it's been running great ever since. If I were you I'd change oil and filters including air filter and give her a workout. Probably just been putzed around too much!

Same tractor needs a glow plug below 80 degrees and will cough a little at first startup but it's a fuel sipping bugger. Good luck!

Thanks for all the ideas and encouragement I did check the return fuel rail and it is on correctly. I took it for a spin down the road today and it sounds fine but it does smoke. I looked at the breather tube way to much coming from that. I did find out that this tractor had sat for at least two years owner was in a nursing home. The auctioneer said they found strange things in the fuel tank so they had it taken off and cleaned. When I get time I plan on changing all filters, oil and new fuel. I will let you know if that helps. thanks again.

Since it has been sitting I would highly advise some Seafoam in the tank and the crankcase before you change the oil. Run it for at least 15 minutes once its up the full temperature. Run the engine at different rpm’s. It cleans the internals very well and if it has carbon build up on the rings it will clean those up also. I had a engine that smoked horribly when I finally got it running. Ran it 15 minutes and it continued to bellow blue smoke. Put Seafoam in the fuel tank and the crank case and within 5 minutes it started smoking less, after 10 minutes the smoke was almost gone. Changed the oil and filter, fresh oil, and more Seafoam. After 5 more minutes it completely smoothed out and has yet to smoke anymore. Changed the oil and filter again and the oil was jet black when drained it. I thought I was looking at an overhaul but it cleaned up the rings and has ran great for 6 years now.

Thanks AC Man I have heard other people say good things about Seafoam I guess it can't hurt anything to try some. I hope it works as good for me as it has for you!! I know that they do sell it around here I have seen it at auto zone. thanks again

we have a 6060 with 9192 hours, second owner, bought tractor in early 90's and this spring when it came out of winter storage it started doing the exact same thing, hard starting even after engine is hot ,smokes blue smoke an has a lot of blow-by with oil dripping out breather,( Never had oil or noticeable smoke out breather tube)
tractor is used to run mower and pull wagons and field cultivator. cleaned fuel tank, replaced lines, changed fuel filter, checked and cleaned injection pump inlet screen, checked pump/engine timing, replaced injectors, checked turbo, checked valve adjustment and ran compression test, I believe the problems to be rings, compression was below specs on cylinders 2,3 and 4. this tractor comes in every 100 hours for regular service schedules per the operators manual. dan
