If the engine is locked up? ... you'll figure it out when you tear it apart.

You may want to check the 8400's transmission for a fault which it's 8.1L engine may have absorbed the transmission's stopping forces??

I would say cam shaft is broke for some reason. Most common reason is when it throws a rod, it usually gets the cam. MACK

My neighbor bought a slightly used JD8110 a few years back. Didn't get 200 hours out of it and the engine puked. Scoured piston on one cylinder. He did a little internet checking, and found it was a common problem on that engine, but JD never fessed up to the problem.
They told him some ridicules price to put one piston and sleeve in, but couldn't guarantee the others would hold up. I think it was 14K to get it back in working order with new sleeves and pistons. I have run it a lot, and it's pretty handy for light tillage work, but lacks higher field speeds , just can't figure why JD would let that engine go with known problems in them.
