I know everybody walked by this poor G, but did you really look at it.
There wasn't a piece of metal on it that didn't have a weld on it or was broken, cut, or beaten off with a very dull tool! It looked like you threw weld at it with a shovel! I do now feel a lot better about my welding after seeing this poor girl. The engine cover was notched with a very dull ax to mount the car power steering pump, and the other side had the aux fuel tank screwed to it! Even the starting crank had a screen door spring retainer screwed to the SMV sign. Where the front lifts slide on to the square bar were shimmed with old broken hacksaw blades welded into place so they wouldn't fall out. Worse yet, it was for sale and the sign stated "Good engine"
Myself and several of the Gadsden group laughed at it and really worked it over hard.
But guys, I just wanted you to know I was around when he came to load it, it fired right up, purred like a kitten, no smoke, no noises and he drove off down the hill!

Joe, I saw that thing and it was a sad sight. It had been so abused I just couldn't stand to look at it too long. Just shows you how tough an Allis is, with all that neglect and shoddy maintenance it would still fire right off and run good.

Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

It looked like it had just been drug out of a fence row. I also was surprised when it came driving by me. Like Joe said it ran smooth with no smoke. I guess it’s true looks can be deceiving.

I'm glad I didn't see it. It might be in my shed right now (just kidding). The saddest one I saw was the possum tractor.

But Joe, it's the only G produced with a rear view mirror. I guess the owner just wanted to see if that cub was gaining on him in the tobacco patch. I have plowed many hours on my G and I think it would take some doing to abuse one like that. You never know what was on the previous owner/owners were thinking. Scott

That's the type machine I enjoy looking at,which is why I like going to auctions a lot more than going to shows.Once I've looked at a couple totally restored WD's,C's or whatever models the next 20 in the row are all going to be basically the same. But at an auction with
off the farm machines each and every one is different and has had its own one of a kind modifications  over the years.Original is fine but if I need to add or take off something on any machine to help me get the job done I'll do it int a heartbeat. If that old G could talk I'd bet it'd have some of the most interesting stories to tell of any tractor at the show.

John, It was $1400.00 for $400, I’d took it for the motor!

Yes, someone made their tractor look like an opossum. It was part some type of Allis but mostly homemade. It had a tail, ears, and whiskers made out of barbed wire. It was unusual to say the least, but very rough. My wife may have a pic of it, if so, I'll post it later.

Gary, many tractors have something added or removed; but the manner in which this was done (on this tractor) was depreciatingly, almost unbelievable. Herb(GA)

The owner had all the parts lying around and wanted to build a rat tractor. He and I talked about reversing it and agreed it was dooable. It was built from scrap parts in less than a month. Other than scraping parts I think it is cool ,but I like rat rods. The parts were left over from the great looking IB he restored that was sitting beside it. By the way his wife wants to sell her BO Jon der and keep the IB for her. Good woman. Joe may have pics.

There's a lot to be said about the old tractors that still wear their "work clothes". The patina that had been gained through many years of hard work and being baked by the sun and washed by the rain is sort of a testament to the life they lived in the service on the farm. That old G may have looked a sorry sight, but it sounds as though she still has it where it counts. If I had the opportunity to take her home I would probably just give it a good grease job and leave her be, all of those creative additions definitely tell a story....
Grease is always cheaper than bearings!!!
