Please disregard if you  have seen this before.

This my grandpa's '39 B and as you can see this is a unique muffler, not original  for the B. The picture was taken in 1952.

Do you think the muffler was made for a tractor? Or for a pickup truck?

Anyone seen a muffler like this before? Make?

         Thanks, Mark

Can't comment on the muffler, but that chain on the rear wheel is SERIOUS.

Back in the day, some farmers put on whatever they could find as long as it was cheap.  They did not care if it was correct for a particular application.

Good quality pictures for 1952. The muffler could be off anything, I ain't even got a guess. I agree with Hubnut, wicked chain. Why only one?

I remember seeing one in the corn crib when I was a youngster, had a hole in the side of it.

I would guess for plowing The land side wheel would always be the first to slip and this might help with slipping if there was a little extra weight on that side.

Ma' man Don is right on. Spark arrest muff for sure! See them on different types of LeRoi power units, Wisconsin twins, and old forklifts like Hyster's. We had a muffler similar to that on one of our old H80C Hysters down at work. We replaced it years ago cause it rotted out and burnt through. The Hyster is equipped with a F226 or 227 Continental engine and is still in service. Can't kill it. And those Yales we have can't pick or come close to those old H60C and H80C's we still have. That equipment was built to last.....! And it does!!

Love the hat! Old photos RULE!

Spark arrestor mufflers typically had fine mesh screens inside, and typically, they would stay pretty cool-to-the-touch on the outside.  Used to be one on one of my dad's Model AA Ford trucks.  I've seen some that were made to be disassembled for service... looked like they were packed with coarse steel wool.  They worked fine, from what I recall.  If I were concerned about setting a well-dried field on fire, I'd certainly have a spark-arrestor...
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Thanks again,

Is there a source for NOS spark arrestor mufflers, like the one in the pictures here or off the AA Ford truck?
