I have a B bought in pieces. It has a water pump and came with what I think is a radiator designed for the early system. Has internal fastening for the cap. From what I can find, all I can buy is a non pressurized cap for it. Will that be fine, or should I buy a different radiator? This one is in very good shape. Never had to deal with this so I could be thinking all wrong.

My Shoup 2013 catalog shows only one radiator for B, also fits C, CA, D10, and D12. A pressurized cooling system raises the boiling temperature of the coolant and allows for better engine efficiency, and a more effective radiator
In the early B days, with alcohol based antifreeze, thermostats typically were 160 F because running warmer would boil off the antifreeze, so radiators weren't pressurized. With modern antifreeze thermostats run 180 or warmer with pressurized radiators. Adding the modern antifreeze raises the boiling point of the coolant too. One way to test for the amount of antifreeze is to test for that boiling point with a sample in a pot on the kitchen stove using a cooking thermometer. I'd test the thermostat too. I don't even trust new thermostats without testing them before installation. The shop manual should show such details and variations. The Op manual too, but I don't have an Op manual other than the military manual. http://geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/Allis-Chalmers-G-B-C-CA-Service.pdf http://geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/BMilitary.pdf Gerald J. |

If the radiator is in good condition, just get a new non pressurized cap and use it. You can go to the new style rad if you want to, but you'll never have a problem with boiling over with the original and 50-50 antifreeze.

The B is a basic "cold running" tractor, even with the pressurized system.
In fact, the only B we had with a overheating problem belonged to a Golf Course. The radiator was leaking but there was no problem there is always plenty of water available on a golf course. If it did overheat they would fill in from the lake or stream. Of course, no one considered the dirt flowing in the stream. The dirt collected in the block and clogged the coolant flow. Needless to say they needed a radiator repair, a tear town, and flush. Take good care of my favorite Good Luck! Bill Long |
