What is the proper size hydraulic hose to run the remote ram on an Allis Chalmers implement, 3/8" or 1/2"? Single acting cylinder ran off of a WD45. All the ports on the Allis cylinders I have are 3/8" NPT. What size were the original hoses? Thanks, Tim

I don't know what kind of flow those tractors had, though I would imagine it's 5~ GPM. 3/8" hose is more than big enough for even for 8GPM. 1/2" hose is way overkill. 1/2 hose is good for about 15 GPM while keeping the velocity at under 20 FPS. A lot of new equipment today comes with 1 wire hose from the OEM, and that's used with tractors that make better than 3000 PSI. A WD45 doesn't make near that, so 1 wire would work. That said you can hardly but 1 wire. Most dealers have 2 wire hose, and that's more than enough.

3/8" hose with a operating PSI rating of at least 4000 PSI. When the hydraulic ram hits full extension the pressure will spike to 3500 - 3700 PSI "IF" set correctly.

I would not use any thing but 4 braded hose. Pump is supposta to be 3600 psi and I have saw some spike out above 4500 psi. A busted hose at 3600 psi can do damage to the body. Be safe. MACK

A 2 wire 3/8 100R2 or 100R16 hose is rated for 4785 psi and is more than adequate. Even a 1/2 2 wire will handle the pressure. When I make hoses I use R16 because it is more flexible than the R2. The 4 wire 3/8 hose is rated for only 4000 psi and cost about 3 times as much as well as being stiffer. The rating take into account any pressure spikes.

High hydraulic pressure reminds me of back in the 1970s, a community farmer put his thumb over a hydraulic cylinder's hose that had a pinhole leak. He thought by doing so would keep oil from spraying a mess. It's pressure injected his thumb & quickly filled it to 3-4 times in size. Luckily he didn't loose thumb, but it took months of draining & antibiotics to heal. Always maintain good hydraulic components.
