battery cable terminals and batteries are pretty much junk. previous owner cobbled up terminals on his own and they were too small for the stock wire that came with the machine. Also found the belts on the generator were very loose so not putting out enough juice to keep batteries charged. Solution.

1. replacing both batteries with new units of proper size and cranking ability.
2. Replacing all battery cables for not just batteries but to starter. Sure there is juice loss there after 56 years of
    abuse and lack of maintenance.

QUESTION. Can I use 2awg#00 welding wire instead of battery cables of same size. Book called for #00 cables.
                   What do any of you use or suggest for a cable replacement. Battery cable or Welding Cable?

3. will also put in a battery cut off at the same time. Currently does not have one. Do they still sell the stock item
    or will I be going for an after market. I saw some nice ones that let you cut off both batteries or just one. I
    assume you use both batteries to start the unit so that feature is not needed. Just a simple cut off switch.

Simple cutoff switch for the final feed out to the starter will be enough, commercial switches out there perform better than the originals. I just went to a local parts dealer, bought cables to length with crimped on battery and eyelet ends. Conventional battery cables suffice as you will be wired 24v. Are ready made either eyelet or battery terminal ended cables for at the batteries. I use two Group 31 12v truck batteries instead of the four six volt units.

Just remember on these tractors + goes to ground - goes to starter stud. Positive ground unless converted later.

Thank you DMiller. I was pricing out 00 cable and was pricey. thank you for the help. I have the originals in place and was just going to replace one at at time to be sure I matched up correctly. My 16 uses 2 12 v batteries now however the previous used a couple of car batteries and in conjunction with the loose belts just wouldn't get a good connection.

Did you put the cut off switch on the right hand battery box as that is the side the cable to the starter is located.

This cut off switch is exactly what I want. Great and thank you. Did you mount yours outside of the battery box or inside?

I have replaced my AC batteries with the correct size BUSS batteries three times but now I use car batteries. The correct size batteries were difficult to install because of their weight. The heavy batteries did not last any longer than car batteries. The car batteries are easier to take inside for the winter. I use wood to take up the extra space and keep the batteries from sliding around. I do not have any problems starting my HD6G using automotive batteries.

Might want to think about putting cut off switch on the ground side. thats the way I see them on the machines I have that have them on there.

Thank you for the information Dozer.

My 16 has larger pickup batteries currently but are old and not holding charge. I took them out and charged them but bleed down quickly. Thought I might just as well start out fresh and then I know what I have. I found Exide heavy duty batteries at TS. With trade in they are $100.00. Not much more than the car battery's cost of $80.00. They are larger and a direct replacement in number of plates the original batteries that came with the unit had.   Overkill??

Thank you JC(WI). Looks like the posts would accept a standard 3/8" noose cable connection.
