After the motor warms up the temp gauge goes all the way up to hot and likes to stay there. The motor is not hot, I replaced the thermostats and used a hand held laser temperature gun to check the head temp. Do I have a faulty gauge or sending unit?

Start with the sender because it's easy and cheap. I'll bet it's the gauge.

I am dealing with the same issue on a 6080 right now. I have a new sending unit that I'm going to put on today as soon as I get out of the house. You can check the gauge. Pull the wire off the sending unit. The gauge should go to cold and if you ground it to the block it should go to the high mark in the red. My gauge seems ok so I got a sender. Good luck.

The gauge can test OK and still read high....been there before.

I fought a similar issue on my 7060 and I pulled one of the other plugs right beside the electric sender and ran a manual gauge from there to the dash. Both gauges work, but the factory gauge is almost always much hotter than the mechanical gauge I added in.
