    Posted: 31 May 2017 at 5:42pm
Listening to the morning farm report an ad for a local tractor dealer came on.  It stated that Mahindra was the 'best-selling tractor in America today' and I had to wonder...is it, really?

Not that I'm aware of -- too much green in the (San Luis) Valley, and a lot of older equipment, too.

I hear that, too. But I thought they said best selling world wide. Darn sure aren't best selling in my area, because I don't think I've ever seen one. Darrel

They are the largest manufacturer in the world, not the US..  They sell MOST in India and China, but do have quite a few sales in the USA.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

The smaller IH tractors 444, 544, etc. were made by Mahindra as I recall. Believe they hooked up with IH in the late 50's and stayed with them into the late 60's or early 70's?
I spent plenty of time in India and Pakistan from the late 80's until 2000 and you could not swing a dead cat without hitting a Mahindra or Massey Ferguson. Mahindra has been around a long time and like other large companies in India, products are shipped worldwide albeit under different names and they showed up in the states under their own name 15 - 20 years ago.
Seem to recall they picked up the license to manufacture the "Jeep" in the late 40's also but do not remember if it was the Kaiser or Ford manufactured unit (war time unit Ford made when Kaiser could not meet demand), made under license.
Can't speak for the newer Mahindra but they have been selling plenty of them in these parts, from what I see in my travels.

B series internationals were what mahindra originally bought the line from IH.  For a while, the B-275 was cast into the torque tine, IIRR...

I always thought of them as a bathtub full of gears...Wink

We have a gas 424 IH since new in 1967. I saw a 2012 Mahindra model and noticed the casting from the clutch looked way too similar, turns out there is a strong connection.

I always heard Massy was the best seling world wide.  That is why AGCO keep the Massy line when they started dropping tractors lines.

My reference to IH concerns the "IH" smaller models sold in the US during those years; sold as IH but actually made by Mahindra and badged as International's.
Plenty of them still out there and I ran across one some years back. Drove by an older fella stuck in the ditch while brush cutting. Had enough heavy chains with me to allow 3/4 Dodge to still be on shoulder plus I had nearly 1000# of oilfield equipment. Looked tractor over for best hookup point and sure enough, tag denoting made by Mahindra but metal name plates on hood were International.
IH sold plenty of them back in the day.

There's 3 Mahindra dealers in my area, actually it's the same company that owns them all, but they must be doing something. I know when I looked at pricing once they looked like they looked like you were getting quite a bit of bang for your buck...
As far as Massey goes, they don't sell around here. Prairie Ag in Prairie City had the small utility line for a while, but they just didn't sell and they ended up dropping them.

Mahindra does sell the most units world wide but most like said above are in India and China.  We have a Mahindra dealer 12 Mile from us, from what we see they do not sell many.  I also know other Massey Dealers who have Mahindra as well and claim they sell 50/50 MF to Mahindra.  I think they are very solid tractors but controls can be crude.

Steve, you are correct. Largest seller in the world 100 hp and below, but not in the US. But they are a close second to Kubota in the US.
I was looking for a 26 hp 4x4 utility tractor last year. I figured that size would allow me to mow my yard, loader work, and backhoe if I could afford it. Lots of uses for that on dads small farm. My 1st choice was Massey. But, I cant get a belly mower for it. Also no back hoe. Bummer....next choice was Mahindra as my brother bought one new in 2008. Very impressed with it when I borrowed from him several times. Mahindra gave me everything I was looking for. 60" belly mower, backhoe, front end loader. All but the tractor is made in the good ole USA. All metal fenders, built very well.
Decided to check out the Kubota just to satisfy myself. No comparison in my opinion. Lift capacity in the loader was 400 lbs less than the Mahindra, rear hydraulics was an even bigger difference. Hydro system noise was loud compared to the Mahindra.
3 year full warranty, 5 year engine vs 1 and 3 for Kubota. Kubota is full of plastic parts, good reason it weighs 400 lbs lighter. Guess what, its a tractor, you need weight for traction. No doubt Kubota makes good tractors, lots of them out there. But it seamed cheaply built.
So, yes I am a proud Mahindra owner. This little tractor has surprised me with its capabilities, its toughness. Each attachment works very well, belly mower does extremely well. Tractor is quiet compared to others and I couldn't be more satisfied. Only Mahindra gives you the option of geared or hydro transmission in that hp size. Did i mention they gave me a free 6' yard rake and 0 % financing for 84 months? Free filters for my first 50 hr service. A lot of dealers in Va, 3 within an hour of me.
Oh, did look at the New Holland, walked away after I found plastic fenders and hood. Didn't even start it.
I have no doubt in their claim that their #1 in the world, maybe in the US before long.

Hood, engine panels, are metal as well, forgot to mention that. Only plastic is at the console. I can also leave the belly mower on and put the quick attach backhoe on and use it. Quick attach loader as well. And no it wasn't cheap, $29K, still less expensive than the Kubota. CRD engine, no DEF. Locking differential. I opted for the hydro trans which makes mowing so much easier and of course live pto. Geared didn't offer live pto. Only down fall that I am aware of. Optional tooth bar allows for aggressive digging with the loader.

AC720Man,
Your Kubota findings are the reason my brother just traded his for a new Kioti. He says the Kioti does with ease what the Kubota wouldn't begin to touch. His Kubota wasn't trouble free either, needing next front axle seals at the 200 hour mark. It was a babied garage kept tractor too.

He liked the Manhindra as well, knew the Kioti dealer better and was comfortable with him.

Years ago the Kioti dealer did tell me Mahindra was the best selling tractor in the world so it's something I've heard before.

There is a Kioti dealer 45 minutes away but I didn't check them out because I wasn't familiar with the brand. I had heard they were a relative of Kubota but I may have been misinformed. Hope he is happy with his Kioti, none of them are cheap in price. I would be interested to know if they offer the same implements as i got in a 26 hp tractor.
