I purchased a wd 45 which has been converted to 12 volt. It never charged the battery so I put a new alternator on and tested it and still no charge. Found out someone had cobbled some wires to make it run. I used a chart to wire it back to normal and no spark, found out the amp meter is bad, can I wire this with no amp meter? Is that a problem or does it need to be there? If I can wire with no meter is there a chart out there of how I need to do it?

To do without an ammeter hook the two wires that went to the ammeter together. The old ammeter probably didn't survive the charging current the alternator can give. Probably ought to be a 60-0-60 ammeter for the typical 10SI alternator instead of the original 20-0-20 or 30-0-30 ammeter. I like to have an ammeter so I can detect proper charging. The charging wire also ought to be 6 or 8 gauge copper to carry the alternator current safely.

Why would you want to eliminate the ammeter? To save a few bucks? They do not cost much. As Gerald points out, it gives you an idea if the charging system is working as it should.

No not to save a few bucks only because I had it disabled in my shop and needed it out. I did wire it without one and may replace it later with a bigger one. It is charging now when I test the voltage on the battery with a meter running and reved up it's over 14 volts.

It should only go to 14.200 volts otherwise the battery will be overcharged.
