I was talking to a friend at church the other day, and he said that on the farm when he was growing up they had a WD that they sent in to get a "Power Pack", to up the horsepower to a WD-45. Does anyone know what all this contained/ what they did to the tractor?

M & W piston and sleeve kit # SP-46 raised the HP to 40 at the PTO, not 43 like a WD-45. We had one and it never would match the WD-45, altho better than a standard WD at 33 HP.

Thar's right doc, but if you were driving a 55-56 Chevy or Ford, you had a 4 barrel engine with dual exhaust from the factory..

I think Dr is right, I remember people who put Power Paks in M IH to make them like a Super M. I think M and W made them for alot of different tractors.

The Chevy reference had a "Power Pack" head on the early 265 and 283 engines. They were identified by a small "Peak" on the end of the head.

Did the WD crank need to be replaced with a WD-45 crank as well?
I've been told that many farmers replaced the cranks instead of buying a new 45.

My Grandpa worked with Lester at Sealed Power. For his retirement the plant manager called my Grandpa into his office and lead out a new sleeve and piston set for his WC. They said that WC really ran after that! Grandpa broke his arm, hand starting it once a wile after that and never really used it much again.

I remember M&W turbocharger kits back in the early days of tractor pulling in our area (early 70's).

A lotta guys put d17 sleeves and pistons in. Don't know if they would work in a straight WD though, know they worked in the WD45. M and w made governors for McCormick Deering 1020's, my 1020 had 1, dual wheel hubs, etc

D17 pistons on a straight WD 4" stroke tractor don't work well. Compression ratio is really low. However I've heard that WD pistons in a 45 or D17 with 4.5" pistons makes the compression so high you almost need racing gas. I have no first hand knowledge of either of these events, but have seen them discussed on here. |
