Hello,
I was hoping to see if I might pick your brains a bit about my D17 series IV gas. It has developed an issue with running smoothly. It does not seem to matter if the engine is hot or cold. It will be running fine one minute and start sputtering the next minute (even if just sitting there with no load). Adjusting the choke, throttle position, or carb settings does not seem to affect it. I rebuilt the carbureter (including re-adjusting the float) and it seemed to make no difference. I "feel" like i can keep it running if I play with the fuel shut off by the bowl (to restrict the flow, maybe getting too much gas?). Also, when it stalls and I try to restart it with the fuel valve open, the carburetor will soon begin to drip gas. This seems to me like a fuel problem that cannot be fixed with making fuel system adjustments which would lead me to believe it may be an ignition issue. Please help! Stumped, Alex |

The carburetor drips gas where? Sounds like the float is still set wrong or sticking.

Is there a way to "check" the governor with out taking it apart?
You think the float may be too far open? there is a screen in the bottom of the carburetor bowl that is leak when "flooded" Alex |

Does it do this with the throttle wide open as well as turned back? Yes, check the carb and other fuel issues. Also check the entire ignition system. Check plugs, wires, rotor, cap, points, condensor and the coil. If everything checks out check the valves with a feeler gauge. Last, and hard to see, check for a sticking valve.
