I like Mack trucks. We have a dealer in our town since the mid sixties. I rode in one like that last winter. When we went up a steep hill, he  reached thru the wheel to shift the gears, and the right hand was shifting into a different range. At least thats what I think was going on. Nice truck Lonn.   Tim

I was going to test my memory and ask if that was an R model. Was a yard tractor the U model? No air conditioning and no power steering, YUK.
I was the low man and stuck in a Mack COE years ago and when you braked you thought the whole cab was going over forward. Luckily there usually was nothing for me to drive as one or two out of seven were broke down so I helped the mechanic in the shop. They are more like a piece of Industrial Equipment than a vehicle.

One thing about the U models that make them recognizable is the cab was offset to the drivers side. Lonns looks like a R model to me. They are good work trucks but fell out of favor with drivers because of ruff ride and lack of room in the cab, cab sides were strait with no elbow room and tall guys had little head room.

It's an R. I know nothing about them but my excavator neighbor loves them and had a look at this one. All I know is that it's a 9 speed or what some call a 10 speed (same thing I guess). Here's a pic of the interior.

It originally had a 5 speed which the previous owner gave me with the truck. It'll be a learning experience for sure. I feel like I dove into a deep pond I've never even seen before and did it head first. But Dad doesn't want to drive too many more loads in for me at age 77 and he gave me big hints to get something for next fall. I got this with an aluminum 1992 Timpte as cheap of even cheaper than a large straight truck so I figured it was the thing to do.

Unfortunately no. It's a 1979 with what I was told, a Mack 300. I haven't been able to give it a real good look over as it's still 50 miles from home but hopefully Saturday I can get it. I won't be driving it home, my neighbor will but I'll ride. I guess I just ain't that brave yet.

If it was Allis, I could tell you everything about it but this is new territory for me. My neighbor rattled off a lot of information about it to me and said it was a good deal so now I have it. When I get it home I'll let you guys know more..... or I'll ask my neighbor as he knows as much about Macks as I do about Allis'........ I'll take that back, I think he knows more about Macks than I do about Allis'.

Great Trucks! Worked on a few of those over the years. Take care of it, and it'll last a long time for ya. The R's interiors were designed quite well for function and comfort. Much better than the older styles. That looks to be in great shape! Good luck with it Lonn!

Farm boys learn fast, if it's a 9 speed with 4:17 rear ends with 22.5 tires then 7th will get you to 30 mph, 8th to 45 and 9th to almost 70.

Couple more things, engine can be run at 1200 rpm's pulling loaded trailer no problem but most efficient rpm for fuel milage is 1600, also motor seems happiest at that rpm. At 1600 9 spd in top hole with 22.5 tires will be right at 60 mph. One thing to look at is to see if any wet fuel is present around top of injection pump where lines to injectors connect. Common for them to leak there at about one million miles, Truck garage can try "field fix but if that doesn't work pump needs to go for a rebuild. If fuel is seeping from fittings there DOT can red tag truck. 1985 was the year Mack started building their cabs with galvanized steel so rust was way less of a problem,my last one was a 85 and had about 650,000 when I sold it and cab was perfect but doors were fixed on bottoms.   Good luck.   Manders in Lakeville (just south of the cities) has a big salvage yard that will have all parts new or used you will ever need.
