I am working on getting my unstyled WC running
I have rebuilt the Zenith carb
my rebuilt Fairbanks Morse J mag is back from the shop and looks great
the rebuilder has taped the mag into position ready to fire on #1 cylinder
I had a WC unstyled tractor 30 years ago and this is my second go round with making one run and look great

Can it be as easy as getting the #1 cylinder to top dead center and with the mag in the firing position place it into the housing , matching the slot to the mag and bolting it into place

I have also seen where there is a marking on the flywheel that may indicate TDC of the #1 cylinder

Tractor out of gear, clutch locked into place, gas to the carb

How dangerous is a kick back if the timing is off
keeping my thumb on the underside of the crank
any other precautions I may take

There is not a better sound than a WC starting and running smooth

any help would be great

Paul

You're on the right track. Put your thumb into the spark plug hole on cylinder 1 and hand crank the engine until you feel air coming out of the cylinder. I then use a wire and push it into the hole down to the top of the piston and slowly turn the crank until the piston is at the top. Then install you mag. LOL Bob

The key point in the previous post is that you have to have #1 at TDC after it pushes air out past your thumb. Tells you it's on the compression stroke. Can also be at TDC on the exhaust stroke and it won't run if you time to that!

the tdc mark everyone is talking about.  Where is this located on the unstyled WC?  the top of the bell housing or the bottom?

Thanks Terry

Here is a video I found on youtube showing the fire mark.  I assume a WC is like a D17 in that it has both a TDC and F mark.  The F mark should come a few degrees before the TDC mark as you turn the engine over.

The TDC mark is on the flywheel and could be at the top of the housing with the original flywheel or, like my 35 WC, it has a ring on the flywheel for the starter and the mark will be at the bottom.  It all depends on what flywheel is on the engine.
