I have a 1979 Allis Chalmers 175 diesel that has a Kat's external block heater on it that has stopped operating. I ordered a new block heater, part #0256123 and it just came today. My question is where does it go? Do I have to remove a freeze plug to install it, and if so which one? Does it go on the right side or left? I have a 185 which has the internal block heater on the right side but it seems to be installed in a different manner than would be on the 175. Any help, photos of yours etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Forgot to add, I did look at the parts book and the service manuel and neither were of any assistance.

Okay, I have determined that since I am converting from a circulating heater to a frost plug heater I do need to remove one of the frost plugs. Does it matter which one I install the heater in? Thanks.

Usually the catalog tells you which freeze plug location it's best suited for. Yes, you will have to remove a freeze plug. Did the catalog show it for a Perkins 248?

No it did not. It just showed the part on the corner of the page with no relation to where it mounts on the engine. Other than listing the part number there was no other information.

Some used screw in type just above starter and others in-between starter if soft plug type.

I just looked in the Kats catalog, and they show a freeze plug style block heater, goes in Right Rear corner of block, and it's to be installed at the 12 O'Clock position. Not sure yours is exactly the same, but it's usually a universal deal.

Thanks for the input. I did talk to an AGCO tech who said it should be installed on the left side of the block right by the starter. I'm assuming it should be in the 12 o'clock position. Any thoughts?
