im new here but been reading and learning for awhile now. i do own a wd45 and a 180 gas . i just bought hesston 5500 baler and according to manual it sounds like i have to turn pto off in order to unload a bale . do i have to or can i leave it on?

Dad had a 5800. You have to shut off the PTO to open it. With your 180, just mash the clutch. Works pretty well. Dad baled with a 170.

100 series works nice for round baling. Put pd in neutral to tie. Push clutch in to dump the bale. Love baling with our 185 or 200.

I have 2 5500 balers.  Yes you have to stop the pto to eject the bale.  Also to the comment about starting a bale,  If the belts are good and the hay is dry, the bale will start good.  I like the baler, simple to work on.

to those who responded THANK YOU. i went out and baled this afternoon and no major issues,just old belts breaking.no problems starting a bale.lot easier than square baling!!!!

some of the Hesstons had what they call a short grass starting bar, which was a piece of angle iron, with a plate over the angle, making it triangular in cross sectional shape.  when it's removed, the bales start much easier...WinkWink
