CA Lift Problem

   I bought a CA that had been setting a good while.  The rams and lift arms had been removed at some point. Got the tractor running, replaced the rams and arms and the lift would not work.  There was water in the transmission oil.  I changed the oil.  I had a used pump so I put that on the tractor and the lift will now raise, but will not go down even when the tractor is not running.  I switched out the control valve with another one I had and that did not help.  The bell is not on the tractor so the traction booster is not hooked up.  Any ideas on what to try to get the lift to drop.  Have not attached any implements.

	If all else fails you can always use the - I think - D adjusting screw - the one closest to the transmission. This will move your valve bank and allow the oil to flow back to the sump. However, this is not the final answer, however, it will tell you that the valve bank will operate. The answer may be in the linkage not being adjusted exactly. Perhaps someone can give you the right adjustment to move the valve bank properly. Wish I could help more. Let us know how it Goes. Good Luck! Bill Long

	Thanks, I will try adjusting the screw. It is mentioned in the operating manual I have, but the manual does not give detailed instructions.

	Probably the pump is cruded up and some of the internal parts are stuck.Its been awhile since I worked on one but I used to just take out all the parts I could and soak them and the pump body in something like diesel fuel for awhile clean it all up best I could,put it back together and usually it'd start working.Another reason I always liked to use detergent oil in the rear/hydraulics on those tractors and change it every once and awhile. But as Bill said the linkages need to be adjusted correctly too.

	take the pump apart and clean every surface, then put it back together and the take it apart again and clean every surface, repeat on the 5th time it will start working. Tongue in cheek but that is what I did

	I agree to what the others have said about the linkages. I had the same issue before. Couldn't get the arms to come down with the engine not running and the weight of a plow on the back. I moved the controls on the pump by hand and was able to get the arms to come down. Then was able to get the linkages adjusted right.

	I finally got the lift working. I tried adjusting linkage without any luck. Then I attached a 150 pound weigh to the lift arms and worked with the linkage and screw adjustments again. All at once the lift dropped and is now working fine. It was almost like something was stuck and then freed up. As my Grandpa used to say "Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn once in a while".
