Would they make a pretty good haying tractor? Would use on a 7 ft haybine, square baler, maybe roll baler. How bad are they on fuel consumption? We used to have a diesel and it was a good tractor. Thanks.

At one time the D19 gas was billed as "A tractor that could pass everything in it's class, except a gas pump". The 180 would have a 301 instead of the 262 but I would think if it was worked hard it would burn quite a bit. Although what you describe won't be a constant hard load. I've pulled a 7' haybine with a CA and used less gas than the D15II.

In my opinion the 180 is the perfect hay making tractor. Just the perfect size for every bit of the hay making process. I have a 180 gas and it doesn't do too bad on fuel. I run a John Deere 1219 Moco with it and with a 9' cutter bar it does just fine. Also I use the tractor on the hay rake. Which I like more than using the D14 or Boomer 50. I use to run the square baler with it, until I got the 7040. The controls also for the high/low and hydros just fit perfect for me. Just can't say enough good things about it!

Actually, the 180 gas uses a 265 CID engine.

Couple of my buddied just got rid of their 180 gassers,---one was because of the location of the controls, and the other because of the gas-hoggin'! I have driven both tractors and DESPISED the control location !---after you drive a 190xtd you will NEVER want to drive any other model! LOL!
the other buddys 180 was terrible on gas and spark plugs! as far as hay it's a nice size tractor and yes it will pull a med. size round baler ! I guess its what you get used to driving! LOL!! thanks; ac fleet

Controls are better on 190, but 180 is easier to get off and on. As far as gas, a Petronix or MSD ing. system will make a big improvement for the 180gas. MACK

I run a 190XT gas in the hay field. Lots of folks assume it to be a gas hog but It's not that bad actually. It will only burn as much fuel as needed for the load. I run it on the rake because that's the lightest work in the field. If you work it at 40hp it will burn the same as any other gas tractor at 40hp, if you work it at 90hp.... well gas is cheap now days...
Mack I am in need of ignition maintenance on my XT, still running points. What kind of improvement do you claim with an ignition upgrade? 5-10%? Do the electronic ignition system work as reliably in winter cold? I feed with mine in the winter and it will start right off in any temp, but is getting a little slobbery till warmed up.
