Ok guys, building a D17 puller and need to know what I can remove from inside the torque tube to reduce weight. Also how much ( or little ) oil do I have to use and if anyone has ideas or pics of pulling hitch please forward to me. Trying to get down to 4000 lbs. Using NF, 38 rears, and the Cap Bros lite weight centers.

Hydraulic pump needs to go. You can also remove the lube pump for the hand clutch. Use a D-15 front support and pedestal.

Not sure on the oil level. Had one guy inform me that he only used 5 gal. Another claimed he used styrofoam blocks the fill in the area to limit amount of oil. Maybe the Dr. will chime in on this. If not , I 'll have to check. This was brought up before but I've yet to find it in the "search".

Run oil level by the dipstick. Use 821XL/HyTran oil at about 2 gallons capacity. Lube pump not really needed unless you intend on using the hand clutch for on-the-go shifting all the time. Bearings will get oiled just fine by the PTO gears carrying it up to them. Lube pump was most needed when slipping the clutch on a baler, etc. Have run one like this down the track for 25 plus years.

Another question... I've found a D15 narrow front end complete. This one has power steering. The 17 that it will be going on has power steering. Is this swap worth the weight savings?

Not sure about the weight Chuck but you can remove the cyl from the pedestal and make a plate to cover the hole, that would remove some weight and the D15 front is probably lighter to start with.

I have a completly rebuilt Manual steering set up for D17. It is ready to go. Bearing and seals, replace, bearing lash adjusted per service manual. $250 plus exchange.

FYID15 and D17 use different splines on bolster output shaft and cordinating collar on pedistal. They are not directly interchangable unless you change bolster and pedistal together as a unit.
