Just purchased a beauty ($4K), knowing that the power steering leaks and is empty. Unit is (I think) front and left.
First step is to fill him up to observe the leak for myself. Shall I use off-the-shelf power steering fluid, like for a 21st century car? Care to speculate upon what needs to be fixed? |

I use hydraulic oil which is really 20 weight oil with anti foaming agents I think.
As to where it is leaking I would check the lines first you might get lucky and just have a bad line. |

I used regular power steering fluid in mine. As for finding out the leak, We can't see where it leaks. Clean up all the areas around the front end that are covered in oil and dirt. Once clean and dry, fill up your system and run it, then look to see where the leaks are. But first, check that all the hose connections are tight. The rubber suction hose could be the culprit as well. Another couple of places for leaks are where the steering shaft enters the left side of the casting, and also right at the very bottom where the tie rods are connected.
