Guys:  Am slowly resurrecting an AC H3 crawler. It uses the same type battery tray as found in the D15 and 615 tractors.  The tray and the bolts at the bottom that hold the tray in place are fairly oxidized after 50  years of use. 

Has anyone here on the forum developed a design improvement utilizing  High Density Polyethylene HDPE to keep the acid spillage from eating up the tray  and bolts that hold the tray in place.   I was thinking plywood or masonite at the bottom but changes the vertical profile of the battery near the hood. 

Am thinking a plastic tray with a drain in it would be helpful.  

Would appreciate any insights on this before going to final design.

Regardless of what you make the tray of, it bolts to cast iron.  When you install the bolts on whatever you invent, Never-seize them...Thumbs Up

What about using a boat 'battery box'? They're a solid 5 sided box, no holes so the acid would stay in the box.
I used a 'tupperware' type container from WallyWorld for my Ford garden tractor.best $5 I ever spent.

I just cut a piece of rear tractor tire tube to the size of the battery pan and set the battery on it.  Saves the steel on the original battery tray just fine.  Acid will not come in contact with the steel.
