My 45 has always started fine until recently. It slowly over time got to where the starter was cranking slower and slower (barely enough to get it to fire), and finally yesterday it quit all together. The way it was acting it seemed like the battery was going dead, because it just got slower every time, but the battery is fine. I have full voltage and it is charging fine also. I cleaned all the connections just to rule that out, and still nothing. I checked voltage at the starter also, and have the right amount there, so it ain't the cable. When I pull the starter rod, the battery voltage doesn't drop at all, so I'm suspecting the starter switch is bad. Anyone else ever had this happen? Do I need to pull the whole starter off, or can I just take the switch off and look for something to be wrong? If I need to get the starter off, how do you get it off, I don't see no bolts or anything holding it on????? I just can't seem to get out of my own way lately with keeping my equipment going

Start off by checking your battery cables. Are the connections clean and tight? I mean at the battery, the starter and the frame ground. Remove ALL rust and corrosion at the frame ground. If it looks clean, it may not be clean enough. Judging by your description I'd blame the connections first. BTW, a battery that is fully charged my not have any capacity remaining. Available capacity and fully charged are two different things. Start with your connections. If that doesn't fix it, move on to checking the battery. Perhaps you have a generator shop nearby that can load test the battery.

You can just remove the starter mechanical switch, no need to remove the whole starter. If you do want to remove the whole thing there is a keeper bolt on the left side (as sitting in the seat) and if you remove it the starter will slide back and come out. As far as the start switch goes, it has a large copper tab that makes contact with a tab on the starter when you pull the start lever. Sometimes the copper gets pitted and you can file this down some so it makes full contact. You are on the right track from your description. I would also suspect the starter or the switch since you have already cleaned all the connections.

First thing I would do is start at the Battery. Draw test the Battery and see if it dumps when a load is put to it. If it does, there's your problem! If you don't have a draw tester, stop by your local service station and have em' do a draw test on the Battery. Always check out the power source first. Then move on down the system and do your system checks, cables, connections etc. You'll be a bit surprised how many times its the Battery causing a lot of different issues. And don't let it fool you if its recently new! Doesn't matter. Its new to you especially if its the 6V version... HTH

Sorry forgot to say its 12V system. When I try to start it, the voltage doesn't drop at all, which means the starter isn't even trying to turn. The contacts were pretty corroded when I pulled the switch off and you can see where they are making contact, because it's sort of wearing off at an angle (see pictures). At what point do you replace that switch (and maybe the post going into the starter)? The odd thing is that this slow starting thing just happened a week ago, it literally started great before that, then just started getting slower every time. I put a little oil on the switch too, because it was hanging up a little, so maybe it just wasn't making contact all the way?

The starter is held on with one bolt on the left side which is secured with a jam nut. Remove the bolt, you will probably need to tap the starter with a wooden mallet a few times to work it loose.

I'm thinking it needs new brushes. I'd be taking the starter out first off and looking at them first. Reason is " it slowed over time"...

A slow starter could be caused by a lot of things. When was the last time the Starter motor was rebuilt? It could use just the basics, or it may need the whole complete rebuild. The only way to tell is run it on an 881 machine to see what is torque and output is and how it reacts. We have exchange units in stock if interested. The 1107951 Delco for the WD/WD45 Tractors runs $295. exchange with new switch + $21. for the Postman..

I bought a new made in the USA switch from AGCO yesterday for 25 bucks, I'm going to try swapping that and see if it makes a difference or no, since the contacts on my switch are pretty worn out...I will let everyone know how it turns out...I may file the post on the starter off just a little bit too since it's worn at an angle....if that don't work I will pull the starter and have it rebuilt probably, I don't have an extra $300 to drop on a starter now. Thanks as always for all the help with the question.
