Good Morning to all,,, I got something happening with the hydraulics on the D15 II. After I rebuilt the engine some time ago, and topped off all the fluid levels and drove the tractor around the property several times. Everything seemed to operate good,, the PTO operated great although it had a small oil leak. Got the seal and "O" ring from Rick and then parked the tractor to begin the re-assembly of all the tin, fenders etc. The engine had not run since then,,3-4 months as I had loaned a member here the vaporizer bracket so he could make one for his tractor. Saturday, I fired it back up and moved it to under the carport so I could spend more time workin on it. After I parked it, I noticed a small "frothing" leak under the transport valve. This valve had never leaked so it did not get disturbed during the rebuilding process,,,,also I noticed the lift arms go up soon as the engine starts, but they may have done so before,,,??? The PTO still engages as before. Another thing is that there is now a small drip out of the bottom of the power steering and looks like leak is coming from the main vertical output shaft. Is is possible to remove the center steering arm to replace the oil seal there without dismantling the whole shee-a riski,,,?? Can't figure why the two leaks come about,,,,??? Any suggestions,,??? 1. Can't help you with the frothing at the transport valve.
2. Lift arms going up as soon as the engine is fired up. Is the traction booster disengaged? Lever should be in horizontal position. Same with the hydraulic lever. Have you been playing with the traction booster linkage at the bottom of the tractor? If so, that is your problem. 3. If the power steering oil leak is coming out of the main shaft at the bottom of the front casting, it's probably going to have to come off. Not only is there a seal, there are a couple of bearings that the shaft rides on. Worn bearings are the likely cause of your leak. |

Hey DSeries4,, thanks for the response,,can't figure why the hydraulic fluid is frothing but the oil on dipstick was STILL milky looking last night after engine having "set" for 2 days,,,!! Guessin I'm goin to drain it all today and maybe put some kerosene in there and hopefully flush it out and refill and see what happens. Can't see how any water could of gotten in there,,,but,,?? OOOOH,,,I was hoping you wouldn't say what I thought you said,,,,Are you sayin the whole front casting has to come off to do the repairs,,,?? I understand the oil seal prolly failing due to excess vertical shaft play,,,,,jeeeze,,that is a bfj,,,,!!! I've read where the traction booster system is "adjusted" on all those settings under the middle of the tractor, but I have not done anything on them adjustments except clean them for paint. The only thing I removed under the tractor was the complete brake assy in order to drill and tap a grease zert on the main cross shaft as the pedals were stuck when I got the tractor. The upper of the two levers on left side of quadrant is at the lowest position and I have never moved it while engine was running. The btm lever, I thought was for the lift arms and would only go up when you moved lever up,,,??? Lift arms go up soon as engine starts and you can bounce on em and they feel like they have pressure on them to stay up,,,??? After engine is shut down for a few minutes, you can push em down, but they will not go down by themselves,,,. THanks for your help, I appreciate your time. |

Removing and reinstalling the casting will be the hardest part of the job. Replacing the bearings and seals will be easy by comparison.
I am all out of ideas on your rising hydraulic arms. Maybe check the linkage - something must be stuck somewhere. Good luck! |

Hey DSeries4,,, pulled the drain plug on the hydraulic pump section and about a 1/2 quart of water came out before the really milky looking fluid started draining,,,!!! And don't ask me where the water come from cause I got NO IDEA,,,!!! It has had the cap on all this time after putting new Hydraulic oil in it when I got it. My question now is, will it hurt anything in the internals if I pour bout a gallon or so of kerosene in there and run tractor for a few minutes and then drain and refill,??? According to manual, it takes 9 quarts for the hydraulic pump,,,??? Negatory on the kerosene, folks,,,went to the friendly distributor's place this AM and am glad I forgot my wallet at home,,,, ![]() ![]() needless to say,,I'm thinking diesel might be better anyway,,,,???? "" Removing and reinstalling the casting will be the hardest part of the job."" Hey DSeries4,,,,AND,,,,I am NOW a firm believer of your above statement,,,!!!! Dang,,,you have to almost literally take the whole front end of the tractor apart,,,,,to replace that little old $10.00 seal....if anybody wants the seal number for future reference,,,it is C/R 15015 and if you go to the friendly car parts store and ask for the rear differential pinion seal for a 1962 Buick Electra,,,,they will give you a replacement,,,,,,WOW.!! BUT,,,,getting to that little old seal requires a whole mouthful of cuss words along with a good amount of mashed fingers,,,, ![]() The item I have a concern about is the " packing" that was around one of the tubing connectors coming from the steering ram. It had a long straight piece of the steel tubing that went down into the front support and this packing is around the steel tubing. I don't see the packing listed in the book,,,?? |

OOOPS,forgot the update,,I put two gallons of diesel in the hydraulic reservoir and ran the tractor a few minutes, working both the levers on quadrant plus the handle on the transport valve and dumped that and did it again for good measure and diesel came out clear. Just can't figure how that water got in there cause cap has been on at all times,,,,,maybe some of Shameless's ghosts,,,,?? ![]() |

that's why ya'll sposed to park your tractors under cover! plus condensation don't help any! my 180 gets water in the oil resivors all the time....it seeps in little by little...spose can put an o-ring on the screw in caps. i'm think'in...Les may have stopped when you weren't home and pee'd in there! Black label will make a person goofy like that!
