 Topic: wd45 hand clutch dragging

I have a WD45 and the hand clutch is still dragging when released, I can hit the brakes and still stop it but still pulls the engine down a little. I have checked to see if its properly shimmed and it is. Any ideas to fix this problem or is it the they work. Thanks

They will drag when it's cold, when the tractor is warmed up is it still dragging?

It does drag a little in the summer when it warms up but not as bad when it's cold. I heard maybe to put thinner oil in?

Yes using hyd oil will help and one thing I try doing is to park my tractors with the hand clutch disengaged and let them warm up before using them in cold weather, that will help some too.

I am having the same problem or issue. New high viscosity oil, cold temps. Acts like the hand clutch is engaged and actually moves the tractor pretty good if going on level ground and or down hill.Once it comes up against a stop it pretty much doesn't move then. Haven't had enough warm weather to see how its going to act then. Guess I should have used a lighter oil in hind site. Probably would have just leaked out faster:)
I was hoping I had the hand clutch adjustments correct. Seems good to me, as it snaps over as expected when thrown out and locks in good when pulled back.

Once and a while I have to remove the battery box and remove the top cover off the handclutch. Once there just check to see if the clutch packs are loose. For some reason mine seem to stick together from lack of use. i take a large screwdriver and gently pry them apart to seperate them.. Do not use to much force as to hurt the clutch material,
Some people have said to hook onto a load of shelled corn and haul it to town with the wd. The road jerking forward and back sometimes will free them also

Its just how they are. Both my wd and wd45 do this. The ol 1950 WD is a little more grabby in the cold. But once they get warm it mostly diminishes.

They all do that when cold. I put hydrans oil in mine. When it's 20 below I needed to wait 20 minutes before using it. It was so grabby I didn't want to use it near anything with my big winter clodhoppers on I have trouble getting my big feet on the brakes fast enough to not run into the house.

both of mine tend to drag a little when its cold but they quite doing that as soon as i use them for just a second even if should say allways parked with hand clutch out and brakes on every where around here

I've used my WD45 to blow snow when it was in low teens.It has 80W90 in trans.I start it and let it run fast idle in neutral for 15 minutes or so.Hydraulics are a little slow starting out but soon goes away.I engage the PTO and use the hand clutch exclusively from that point on with no issues of dragging or changing gears. I don't know what makes my experience different from others but I've heard the stories. Have done it this way for 30+ yrs.My two cents.

I had mine dragging as well. I drained all of the oil, removed the battery box and lid, then made sure the plates were not warped and poured diesel fuel between the plates cleaning them out. I also removed the rear plate and and cleaned all of the sediment in the bottom of the housing. Put in New Holland Mastertran oil when I was done. Works great now. Of course as said before need to warm up the oil when cold.
