Was reading some chatter on another site about the 18 speed transmission Allis was close to debuting at the time of the German takeover. Anymore details other than Duetz was quick to kill it.

It consisted of a three-speed range transmission to get the 18 speeds. I'm sure there were other 6-speed Power Shift upgrades to be able to handle more HP and torque as well, but the concept was make a medium range faster than the old low range to get some 8 to 9 mph field speeds. I'm thinking wider/stronger planet gears and an extra disc in each clutch pack would have been a nice start inside the 6-speed.

Did it eliminate that awkward area where 4th low is too slow. 1st high is sorta fast and the jump to 2nd high is way too fast. I wish they had something between 1 and 2 high that didn’t kick you back when you clutched.

I always envisioned their 4th medium speed to be right at 6 MPH. If so, that would have made 5th Med at 7.2 MPH and 6th Med at 9.3 MPH approximately.

Am I the only one who thinks most tractors are geared up too high? One I am thinking of is a JD 4430.......which has 16 speeds. I ran it for several years and aside from road gear, never once had a use for the other top 7. In the working ranges, only 3 of them ever saw much use. On the other hand, 1st on that tractor would be too fast for some hay I was baling a few weeks back. Seems to me that 1st ought to be half the speed it is and the rest spread out more in the middle where they could be used for something.

My buddy had a 7060 with an prototype Allison powershift transmission that was a 15 speed with no ranges I believe. Anyone know anything about that?

It is nice to have some faster working speeds 8-10mph+ with modern equipment. Like pulling a merger, wheel hay rake, or pulling wagons next to a chopper.

I've used the "C" range on the JD's a lot. Side dressing with 28-0-0, round baling, running the grain cart, running the VT, and sometimes on the road when Hi range seems to fast. Did one time chopping hay that 1st gear was too fast for a heavy windrow. Only once.

If I'm remembering correctly 1996 . Met the late Kevin Bein for the first time @ Husker Harvest Days. AGCO had a cutaway of a CVT and Kevin explained and demonstrated the concept of the CVT. Of course he was very passionate about the Fendt designed CVT, that was now under the AGCO banner. I also recall thinking that for us the 9600 series with the 18 speed powershift would serve us well and they did , but today we have 5 CVT Tractors.

As far as the A-C transmission, at least a few of the 8095s had a heavy duty 6 speed powershift and a three speed range. The range shift had a high, low and intermediate position. To my knowledge all of the transmissions were removed from the tractors and destroyed. There is one platform left from one of the 8095s that has the three range shift position. As far as I have gathered there was never a full 18 speed powershift built.

It woulda been nice if the 3 ranges were synchronized.

If this transmission would have been introduced, 3 short years later would have been obsolete. By 1987 Case/IH had their 16-speed full Power Shift and by 1990 Ford had the Funk 16-speed full power shift.

It probably wouldn't of been long before the engineers figured out how to make a full power
. The 3 range transmission would of served as a good intermediate until then. Those must have been in the two fully dismantled 8095s. I wondered why two were still mainly complete.

Yes, Funk is owned by Deere. They make transmissions for the 8000 series Deere, older TerraGators, Ford/NewHolland, AGCO Allis and AGCO White tractors.

Magnums were 18 speed powershift. I think the FNH were too, but wasn't around them much, so don't remember. The AC 3 range/6sp PS could have engineered a clutch into the range section for full 18sp PS, which is exactly what CIH and Funk do. Not sure how feasible it would be in the AC.

Case/IH and Funk transmissions to me are a countershaft design with no planetaries at all. Been a while since I've seen the Case/IH tranny cut-away, but I know that's how a Funk/TerraGator is and the Ford/NewHollands Genesis.

Farmboy 520, any idea where that 7060 is today? Was it a red or black frame tractor? Does you buddy have any pictures of it?

I'd suggest it was a 7050, as Allison was involved with early prototypes 7000 series tractors, but that Allison deal fell apart and Allis went on its own.

It would sure be nice to be able to follow up on that story. That would have been a first for Allison. They never made anything with more than 6 speeds that I knew of.

Id say that -all of a sudden the story is - that someone now has a 7000 series with the Allison tranny- is a story- Allis- Chalmers was working with Allison on an auto transmission arangement, but it was double the intial bid price- so they went theyre own way , which controlled in house price-- lets see some pics of this tractor with that transmission , since hes your buddy , should be no problem ???o Or do tell the dealer - everything has a price and it needs to be out in the world today ;

My discussion with engineer Joe Hoepfel (I am sure I spelled that wrong) was there was a lot of discussion but no engineering , about putting a power director in front of the power shift to yield a 24 speed trans. The issue was the increase in wheel base would have been welcomed, but the strength of the housings would have been compromised w/o bracing .

Well, if it turned out like Massey's 24-speed, that would have been really bad...…...
